We may think of Yosemite national park as Ansel Adam’s outdoor studio.

Today I am channeling Carleton Watkins. His picture is the second slide.

He photographed at Yosemite from 1861 to 1881.

A few weeks ago my family and I made the pilgrimage to Yosemite National Park. It was a short visit but inspiring just the same. Ansel pretty much set a high bar for photographers especially in a park that he knew like the back of his hand. But a photographer making the journey has to raise the camera and make a picture just the same. A homage to Ansel. It was a memorial weekend Sunday and the pack was exceeding capacity and the drive around the valley was torturous. I had seen the falls and hiked up the mountain. Through the trees I saw the half dome on the distance. As we were leaving I thought I made it all the way and not a good view of El Capitan. As we drove through traffic as I made the bed I saw the stone face glistening in the sunshine after a brief rain. I found the one spot I could the car off the road and I ran across up a boulder and o saw the view I needed to see. I made several images on my smartphone camera, the best camera is the one you have with you. Jumped back down and in to the parade of traffic. It’s not an Adams masterpiece but I see what he saw and that’s good enough for me.

Remembering my friend and mentor Kurt Markus who died on this day in 2022.

He was a photographers photographer, truly loved the craft and the people who practiced it. He taught me many things, and I appreciate a good teacher.

This image was made in the sagebrush basin of Tuscarora Nevada - home of the Buckaroos this was his symbolic home and where he rests in peace looking on the sunsetting in the valley.

Looking back on this week although full of many emotions with the passing of my friend Duane, the positive outcome had been watching all of the photos and memories, experiences and observations of a shared experience with Duane, from the intimate moments to the global conversations. His energy was contagious and I see that flowing through the internet into all of our creative souls. The best way for us to move forward is to shoot our way, to create new work, go out and make pictures your way. Your story.

Duane had left his Duane suit.
My adventures with Uncle Duane, started in 1987- although my introduction to his work began in 1982 when I was flipping through the Sequences Book outside the darkroom at PGSA. He was friends with my friend and employer Art Kane, Duane used the rental studio from time to time. Anyway we became fast friends because of Pittsburgh. Fast forward to the mid 1990’s and he would make frequent trips to visit Pittsburgh and that turned into more frequent visits. The last one he stopped in to visit with my Class at Point Park. A class they will not forget.

He was high energy always on, he burned hot. He was proud of Pittsburgh and only weeks ago was asking me to come up with another reason like a class or workshop. Then he didn’t feel well and so it goes. I said goodbye in a recent phone call.
After that call I thought of this sequence - The Spirit Leaves the Body. We talked about his sequences a lot. I mentioned a few weeks ago that I would continue with teaching his contributions to the art and practice of photography. And that my students were working on a Sequences magazine - he was thrilled.
I will miss him.
