Rest in Peace to Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire Battalion Chief John P Walsh (center), who died in the line of duty last night. Chief Walsh suffered a medical emergency while running command at a working house fire in the East Hills neighborhood.

FD, PD, and EMS crews on scene, as well as staff at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, worked tirelessly to save him, but he was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Chief Walsh was 60 years old and had served the City of Pittsburgh for 37 years.

Shortly after 9am on Friday, the Plainview FD was alerted for a truck vs pole at Sunnyside Blvd and Executive Dr.

The crash cracked the pole, causing live wires to be laying on top of the truck and across the roadway. Thankfully the driver was able to self extricate. He was transported to the hospital for evaluation. There was also a large spill from the transformer and saddle tank. Hicksville Hazmat was called in to mitigate it.

Units operated on scene for approximately 2 and a half hours waiting for PSE&G to cut the power so the hazmat situation could be handled.

Units on scene included Plainview FD, Hicksville FD, Nassau County PD, NCPD Highway Patrol, and NCPD Emergency Service Unit, along with PSE&G.

Last Wednesday, just before midnight, while operating at the landing zone for a previous train vs pedestrian accident, the Cold Spring Harbor FD was alerted for this house fire on Middle Hollow Rd.

Units were on scene within minutes and were met with fire through the roof of a 2 story house. Mutual aid was requested from nearby departments and the fire was knocked down using hand lines.

Tower Ladder 582’s master stream was utilized during overhaul to knock down hard to reach hot spots.

Late Monday night, Lewiston PD, Sanborn FD, and Tri Community Ambulance were dispatched to a single vehicle rollover into a creek with possible fire on Saunders Settlement Rd.

Arriving units found the vehicle unoccupied and not on fire. Niagara County Sheriffs K9 was requested to assist in searching for the driver, who was possibly seen fleeing on foot as LPD arrived.

After an extensive search of the creek, nearby brush, as well as a nearby school bus parking lot, the search was concluded with no driver found.

Lewiston PD is investigating both the cause of the crash and why the driver fled. There were no other occupants.

Yesterday was a very busy day for the Grand Island Fire Company. Units responded to a working building fire in the afternoon, followed by a working house fire at night, with other calls between.

Around 12:45, GIFC was dispatched to an automatic alarm at a daycare center on Grand Island Blvd. Arriving units had a heavy smoke condition upon entry into the building. Fire was located in at least one classroom and extended into the roofline, which was difficult to reach. There was heavy damage throughout the rest of the building due to smoke and water damage.

Just after 2200, units then responded to a house fire on W River Rd. Fire was contained to one area of the house, but firefighters had to cut the roof and siding in order to reach pockets of fire.

There were no injuries in either fire, and full albums for both are available on my website (link in bio)
