When you wait out the rain, endure bananas-crazy wind and sand blasting your face, squeeze in tight between 100s of others all hoping to see the sun create a little magic. ☀️💜✨

Sometimes, you get really lucky.

With the summer heat sizzling away, each of my Pericallis blooms have finally all withered into oblivion. But even in its final stage it was still weirdly beautiful. 💜

Prairie dogs (aka ground squirrels) tend to be celebrated for their larger ecological virtues. In the grasslands across the central and western United States, their intricate underground colonies - called prairie dog towns - create shelter for jackrabbits, toads, and rattlesnakes. The bare patches of ground created by their grazing and burrowing attract certain insects that feed a variety of birds. And prairie dogs themselves are a key food source for everything from coyotes to hawks to endangered black-footed ferrets.

There used to be hundreds of millions of prairie dogs in North America. European settlers traveling through the West wrote about passing through massive prairie dog colonies, some of which extended for miles. But over time, their range has shrunk to less than 5% of its original extent due to a host of pressures, including habitat encroachment by humans and disease. 😔

The sun over Sedona finally released its grip on the harsh desert light as it began to set for the day. A cooler breeze lightly blew my hair and as I looked out over the city I noticed the distinct lines and layers in the rocks across from the valley floor. The softened and soothing evening glow now seemed to highlight all of these millions of years old details. 😍🏜️

We’re blessed with the opportunity to stand for something - for liberty and freedom and fairness. And these are things worth fighting for, worth devoting our lives to.

🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 This year July 4, 2023, will mark the 247th birthday of our young nation. The annual holiday marks the anniversary of when the Second Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, stating the 13 colonies’ separation from Great Britain. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

My first morning back in Arizona our group hiked one of the trails before sunrise, looked out over the valley and in-between the red rocks of Sedona. As we made our way down and headed to glorious warm coffee the sun began to rise above the jagged peaks. We paused and took in nature’s beauty.

These are called ‘Senetti Magic Merlot’ - fancy, huh? They are a variety of Pericallis or more commonly known as Ragwort, so not so fancy, but still really beautiful. 😁

Quintessentially Texas.

The Texas Longhorn, one of the state's most iconic symbols, has been hoofing through Texas history for centuries. First brought over by Spanish conquistadors in the days of Christopher Columbus, their numbers increased significantly in the 1600s. As settlements grew and more cattle arrived, the number of escaped cattle increased. It is from these animals that the Texas longhorn began its colorful history.

Initially referred to as "Texas cattle" and later Texas longhorns, the longhorn breed has increased in recognition and numbers in recent years, due to many desirable traits, including longevity, calving ease, resistance to disease and parasites, foraging adaptability, climate adaptability, mothering ability, leaner beef, less dependence on humans, and excellent fertility. Many of these traits may be due to the number of years the cattle survived in Texas without influence from humans, allowing the breed to form its characteristics through natural selection in the harsh Texas climate.

In Central Texas back in March, the rains came down for days and when it subsided many little intimate landscapes were created like this family of mushrooms.

To me it looks like a little fairyland neighborhood. Can you see the bits of blue-gray and orange on the caps? They look like little houses with teeny-tiny shingles. You have to look hard. 😆
