Happy Sunday! Wanna see something cool? A year ago this week I was relaxing at home watching a show when my friend messaged me - “Hey, I think there’s a hovercraft going through the canal!” At first, I thought he was joking or mistaken but I checked a marine tracker and, sure enough, there it was – a Canadian hovercraft traversing the canal! I knew I had to film this so I grabbed the little Mavic Air and managed to catch up with it at the Sagamore Bridge. It was an exhilarating experience - knowing that I was capturing the first time in it's over 100 year history that hovercraft has ever traversed the canal.
I figured it was just going right through and heading to Boston or Canada or something but when it did an about face at the east end of the canal I figured it was just changing some settings going from the canal to open water but it performed landing maneuvers instead! after the landings I went over to the beach and spoke with the captain and crew. They were amazed that I could keep up with them/ how I flew during their beach maneuvers and shared that the hovercraft could reach speeds of 40 MPH "I doubt it but can you keep up with us when we leave tomorrow?"...“No problem,” I said with a smile. Filming the hovercraft’s beaching maneuvers and its high-speed run the following day was incredible. This is easily one of my favorite vessels I’ve filmed over the years, and editing the footage was a blast! Despite the risk of the drone getting caught in the spinning blades of doom, this was not my first rodeo filming a unique maritime vessel...this one just floats over the water rather than gliding through it. Check out the footage here and don't forget you can pull this up on your TV/device of choice by using your voice remote! ttps://youtu.be/GPEuvPuqG4g?feature=shared.
For the first time in its 109 year's of operation, a Hovercraft made a transit through the Cape Cod Canal! The Penac is a Ferry turned Coast Guard hovercraft...
