One of the biggest—and most persistent—myths marine parks like (sea world) have repeated for decades is that collapsed dorsal fins happen “all the time” in wild killer whale populations. Simply put, they don’t. Adult male killer whales in the wild are known for their tall, upright dorsal fins. While bent or partially collapsed fins can occur due to injury, illness, genetics, or other natural causes, they’re uncommon. In captivity, however, collapsed dorsal fins are dramatically more prevalent. *NOTE. just because this keeps coming up in the comments below. Yes I know about Port and Starboard (which are wild orcas) who have collapsed dorsals and there has been a lot of research into why. They fall into injury, illness and genetics category and are considered the rare or uncommon category that I mentioned above.

After thousands of hours on the water photographing and spending time with wild killer whales, I have never seen a fully collapsed dorsal fin on a wild orca.

When whales go people watching! Earlier today we had a close pass from t128 and t125a otherwise known as the Alaskan boys. Both are massive male Killer whales! That dorsal fin is close to 6ft tall!

Nature is amazing… unless you’re an anchovy! Humpback whales lunge feeding in Monterey Bay.

Saturday off the Big Sur coastline was one of those days you never forget. Humpbacks, blue whales, fin whales everywhere—and then this Humpback put on an incredible show in the beautiful evening light. Big thanks to Captain Danny Frank for an amazing day on the water!

Getting to see Stanley is like a celebrity sighting. So many people love this whale, and it’s not hard to see why—he’s a very handsome dude!

I’d choose seeing Stanley over a celebrity any day of the week.

I shared this story in my Stories earlier, but for almost three years, Stanley and his family were the only whales my mom had ever seen when she came to visit the islands with my wife and I. That finally changed this year when she met some new families, but don’t worry—she still saw Stanley just a few minutes after this photo was taken from shore, so the tradition continues!

Thousands of hours on the water. Thousands of whale encounters. Professional photographer for 20 years. Still managed to hit stop recording at exactly the wrong moment. Hey Nikon can we have a post capture video button please 😉😂.

One of those houses with a view like this is still on my dream board. Killer whales in the front yard isn’t a bad way to start the day.

Went and photographed the locals. Always a fun time when you get to hang out with Fox kits. Well I was suppose to be on the water today but Mother Nature had other plans! Today is actually the first time I’ve ever had a trip canceled in the San Juans for weather. Looking forward to being on the water tomorrow though!
