Blood Orange (Blood Orange) at Edgefield Concerts | 8/4/26
The music of Blood Orange is simply perfect for the still-warm evenings of late summer, but as it turns out, those same vibes are perfect for a damp and chilly false autumn. While some people stubbornly rocked the cute, slutty outfits they’d picked out before the forecast turned rainy, it was kind of fun to see an Edgefield full of raincoats and cute beanies, eagerly awaiting the songs of Essex Honey and beyond.
We only got 75 minutes from Dec Hynes and his band, but what a glorious 75 minutes it was. Every corner of the Blorange oeuvre got touched on, from Cupid Deluxe deep cut “Uncle ACE” to a trio of cuts from 2018’s Negro Swan, and why not devote a few minutes to Hynes giving us a solo cello rendition of Björk’s “All Is Full of Love” for good measure? I missed out on seeing Hynes at Kilby Block Party earlier this year, on a different rainy day in a different state, but this was a great way to make up for lost time.
This isn’t the atmosphere I’d hoped for at a Labor Day Weekend Blood Orange show, but while good music fits into the nooks and crannies of our lives, great music has the power to bend reality around itself, making even the mud and the chill of a damp evening well below 60° feel like the sunshine is just around the corner.
