I was commissioned by Boston magazine to shoot a story on Mel King called Top of the Mind on February 19th, 2009. Yep, back in the film days. I remember being so excited and honored to take Mel King’s photo that I chose to shoot it on an 8 x 10 camera and film. He was such a big deal in my house.
When I heard the news that Mel King had passed, it was such a devastating loss. At the same time, I felt blessed to meet him in person. When I take portraits of individuals, I start with the mindset that this person will enlighten me, and indeed this is one of those times. I am so proud that my image is among the many photographs chosen to honor his life. A friend in Boston called to tell me that my image was everywhere. Going down the Instagram rabbit hole, I realized that my Mel King image had been used on T-shirts, inspired paintings, public murals and used to promote various events to celebrate his life and work. Most of the usage of my photo was done without any recognition to the original artist. I had a brief conversation with an individual who used my image on a T-shirt after the passing of Mel King. This individual accused me of trying to cash in. One of the hardest things about being an artist of color is being seen and recognized for your work. So if you see this image in the Boston area on T-shirts, posters, websites, or promoting events, please DM me. It would be nice to know where this image that I took of Mel King has been placed in the world. Peace!
