Happy Labor Day!

I went to Virginia Beach oceanfront this A.M. to shoot sunrise and the start of the semi-finals of the Super Girl Festival Surfing Comp. I saw the first to semi-final rounds and had to bail as I had a few things to do this morning and get home to cookout on the grill!

Had a thousand plus images to download and cull after getting home before I started editing any images. I did finally get through that process πŸ™„, and later this evening started editing. I started with the early morning damn patrol group and the lead in to the contest, but here are just a small amount of the better images processed from this morning. I have a lot more to go through!

Busy past 2 days. Thunderstorms and some incredible lightning last night. I hate to hear that some people were or are still dealing with losing power from it.

This morning however, was much quieter and a lot less humid. I drove down to the oceanfront in Virginia Beach to meet up with my friend and local chase partner William Coyle to checkout sunrise and see what the surfers might be doing this morning. Well.... Virginia Beach is Virginia Beach still, like in my days of bodyboarding years ago. It was pretty much non existent this morning in terms of waves. There is a full weekend going on down on the boardwalk at 1st Street as the Super Girl Surfing Festival kicked off today. I was planning on staying a bit today and setting up to shoot but after seeing the surf conditions, I decided to call it an early morning and head home considering I only had about 3 1/2 hrs of sleep last night after editing the storm images and getting up early for sunrise. Below are just a few images of the happenings first thing this morning at the 1st Street Jetty near Rudy inlet in Va Beach. May head back down in the morning.

Tonights thunderstorms as they passed by Driver in Suffolk as seen from Waterview in Portsmouth. All the large TV transmission towers were hit at some point and a couple times they were all struck at the same time. This was not lightning coming from the cloud down, it was leaders jumping up to meet the crawlers on the backside of the anvil. So the lightning was leaping up from the towers to the cloud!

You will see some water drops on the lens in a few frames, wind was driving the rain right into the lens so I couldn't keep up with wiping it down fast enough. There are some clear images though. The first shot is a tighter image taken with the Viltrox 135mm!

William Coyle shot it with his drone from Hampton! His video is in the comments, check that out!

Hoping for a good chance of thunderstorms later today with some decent lightning for once. We shall see how that all goes. Haven't been out with the camera much lately, I don't do this heat. Besides, had other things going on to take my attention.

But the other day I was playing around with that awesome Viltrox 135mm lens and my boy Stormy. Trying to figure out a good f/stop that would keep most of his face in focus. I also broke out my on camera Flashpoint/Godox flash and threw on the camera to light him up a bit. First image is without the flash, second with. He seems to be a ham for the camera!

Stormy was full of himself last night. First image was taken with just the table lamp light. The second came from an LED panel from Viltrox but has a magenta tone to it that I’m not sure works for me. I was fooling around with the Viltrox 135mm since I haven’t used it very much. Live that lens and you can see how quickly the falloff is with the shallow depth of field. Quick falloff from the eyes being in focus to the rest falling soft.

An image I've never edited. From back in 2022 in Newport News at a place called Lion's Bridge. The osprey would come in the spring and hunt from the banks along the river by the dozens. however, recent construction and work to build a boardwalk there by the city has pretty much destroyed the environment and beautiful backdrop we used to shoot these beautiful birds against. I did not see much coming from over there this year so I did not go. osprey are one of my favorite birds to watch and photograph.

Been working on the images since I got home this afternoon. I've edited 16 total, but these are the 3 of my favs for now. Shot from the roof of my building at work this morning because I was unsure just where the trajectory would come by the building. Next time, I have a better idea and will shoot from a much better location. Virginia Beach
