KShields Photography I’m a long time resident of Poulsbo, Washington who has been behind a camera traveling the world for decades. Thanks for taking the time to visit here.

I’ve raised a family, retired from two careers and now spend my time doing what I loved most - photography. A camera has led me to every continent, guided me to friendships that have lasted a lifetime, and become a true passion. One of my many goals is to find new and interesting ways to present an everyday scene as something intriguing and special. My compositions don’t have a common theme or jump out to be identified as a “K. Shields.” I enjoy experimenting with different styles and processing techniques as I learn them on my journey – a journey that will continue as long as I can lift up the tools of my trade and figure out the latest technology. If you’d like a print, have a question, or just want to share a story or memory that came to you while looking, drop me a line at [email protected]. I’d like to hear from you.

I gathered hubs & the dog (Oliver) and headed to a small cabin on the water at Vashon Island for a much needed break and bit of respite. The weather was hazy and we had lots of fog and cloud cover, but the break to recharge was wonderful. I managed to get a few image during our short stay. Enjoy!

A beautiful new downtown Poulsbo Light Pole Banner was introduced today! The Suquamish Tribe collectively approved K.Ahvakana’s paddle design and gifted it to the City of Poulsbo for the program. In Lushootseed (a Coast Salish language spoken by tribes around Puget Sound), the phrase for "Paddles up" is šaqalwa?s, a universal sign of peace and respect. This design makes five in the Light Pole Banner Program.

The Nordic/Scandinavian heritage banners are the default when holiday or civic displays are not active. I donated these two new postcard designs to the Poulsbo Historical Society Maritime Museum Gift Shop. If you’re in the area, stop by and check them out! Colorful sails filled the water on a gray & foggy day around Bainbridge Island on September 19-20 during the Port Madison Yacht Club’s annual Round the Island Race and Cruise. There wasn’t much wind so the reflections are great and our previous hot days caused a lot of heat distortion in the cool air. The mix of cool and warm air acts like a moving prism of glass that bends the light (mirage). I was using a telephoto lens. The lens compressed 200 feet of air between me & the boats causing a shimmering effect. The solution would have been to shoot closer, at a different time of day or at a higher elevation. Ha! I got the moment only. I’ve seen that there’s software on the market that will create that effect. Not here - I get to say “it’s not ai, it’s physics.”
