I love this view because it showed the scale of what feels like a massive drop off. We would drive though the tunnels in the darkness then open up for a brief moment - looking down off the bridge was crazy just the amount of space between the bridge and the ground. For someone who is not used to bridge - tunnel highways it was really cool that that would be 90% of the road.

As Melissa and I were walking through a botanical garden in Funchal, it started to rain so we decided to wait it out in a cable car. We rode across the valley to Monte and back and by the time we returned it was all sunshine again. In my last post, I talked about how some of my favorite images were made from the side of the road. We were driving on a road along the coast on the Island of Madeira and the old road continued straight but was blocked off because it was broken up ahead and the new road veered into a tunnel, cutting through the mountain. We pulled over and walked down part of the old road and looked out at the other side of the Atlantic Ocean! It was very windy and the waves were doing ~their thing~

Some of my favorite images are from the side of the road. Madeira roads don’t have shoulders and most of the ones we were driving on were bridges and tunnels. If I could, I would have pulled over constantly because the views were incredible.
