The swamp doesn't reveal everything at once.

Whispers of the Swamp is about the quieter side of Louisiana's bayou country — the still water, cypress trees and subtle details that become visible when you stop rushing through the landscape.

That feeling is at the heart of my photo book, Into the Lost World: A Journey into Louisiana's Bayou Country.

The book grew from years of exploring these wetlands and trying to photograph not just what the swamp looks like, but what it feels like to be there.

After 20 years of photographing Louisiana swamps, I still stop for this light.

Lake Verret's Last Light captures one of those fleeting moments when the cypress trees, water and sky seem to glow together.

This is why I keep going back to the swamp. The landscape may be familiar, but the light is never the same.

It's also the experience I try to share during my Into the Swamp photography workshops — learning to slow down, watch the light and find photographs in what can initially look like visual chaos.

This is why I keep going back to North Dakota.

First Light in the Badlands captures the moment sunrise begins to sweep across the rugged landscape of Theodore Roosevelt National Park.

The Badlands are already dramatic, but the light is what makes them extraordinary. Every ridge, canyon and layer changes as the sun climbs higher.

North Dakota remains one of my favorite parts of the American West because there is so much room to explore — and so many opportunities to find your own composition.

New York has far more wilderness than most people realize.

Thousand Islands Sunrise captures the quiet beauty of the St. Lawrence River as islands, water and morning light come together along the northeastern edge of the Empire State.

It's one of the reasons I enjoy photographing New York so much. Beyond the cities, there are mountains, rivers, waterfalls, farms, forests and thousands of miles of coastline to explore.

And when the light is this good, it's hard to ask for much more.
