This wasn’t the plan.

The sari wasn’t draping the way I intended, so I stopped trying to force it and let it become something else. A modern Kalamkari in a Greek toga silhouette.

Kalamkari has long been a storytelling tradition, with artisans painting scenes from epics onto cloth. Today, many artists are honoring that same centuries-old technique while reinterpreting it through florals, contemporary motifs, and modern design like this saree of mine from Kasturi Kundal

At the same time, Christopher Nolan is bringing Homer’s The Odyssey to a new generation.

It made me wonder…

What if the purpose of tradition isn’t to keep retelling the same stories?

What if its purpose is to give us the courage to tell new ones.

Stories that honor where we came from without carrying the weight of the beliefs, expectations, and limitations those stories sometimes passed down.

Perhaps the greatest tribute to our heritage is not repeating it.

It’s having the courage to rewrite the parts that no longer let us become who we’re meant to be.

Blend in long enough and you forget you were ever allowed to stand out.
Merge in.
Adjust.
Stay easy.
Else they will be uncomfortable.
And one day, you mistake the version of you that learned to disappear for the real you.

That is the work.
Not becoming someone new.

Learning to separate your real dreams from the watered-down version you created so nobody would question you.
Because the career move, the bucket list, the passion project, the next version of you may not be too much. Instead. You may just have been trained to treat your own desire like a threat.

And now your body is asking, “Is it finally safe to want this out loud?”
Follow if you are done disappearing politely because I am thinking of you somewhere on the Mediterranean coast

What if the greatest legacy you can give your children is the freedom to carry your values while surpassing your limitations?

Watching my two adult children walk ahead of me through the streets of Sicily, I realized this is the legacy I want to leave. Not every norm that shaped me, but the essentials: love, integrity, family, courage, respect, and belonging. Culture can shape us, but it should not limit what we pass on.

I felt pride as their mother and recognition as a mindset coach. I also felt the ache of what might have been if I had taken more risks earlier. Still, at sixty two, growth is possible. There is room to release old conditioning, act with courage, and choose a path that feels right. It’s always about feeling right. NOT looking right.

Noto was rebuilt after the January 11, 1693 Val di Noto earthquake, and the cathedral partially collapsed on March 13, 1996 before being rebuilt and reopened in 2007.

Noto knows something about rebuilding.

After the earthquake of January 11, 1693, the old city was not simply repaired. It was relocated and rebuilt into the baroque city we see today.

Then, centuries later, on March 13, 1996, the cathedral faced another collapse when its dome and parts of the structure gave way.

And still, here it stands.
Reinvention is not always loud. Sometimes it is stone by stone, decision by decision, truth by truth.

Happy 250th America. 40 years ago when I came here, I was so impressed by its core that I decided to make this my home. I know in my hearts of hearts that despite what appears to be different, that strong moral human ethical core still exists. Whether you call this land home as original native lineage or came as immigrants on Mayflower or just landed at the land or sea ports, this land is our land so may peace be with all of us.
