Almost every family walks into a session saying the same thing…

“We’re awkward.”

“My husband doesn’t like taking pictures.”

“Our toddler isn’t going to cooperate.”

Then, somewhere around ten minutes in, something changes.

You stop worrying about where to look or what to do.

Your little one starts giggling.

Mom and Dad relax.

You forget there’s even a camera in the room.

Don’t worry… you’ll absolutely get those beautiful, smiling, “Hallmark card” photos for the grandparents’ frames, too. 🤍

But my favorite images are the ones in between.

The laughter.

The cuddles.

The tiny hands reaching for Mom and Dad.

The moments that look exactly like this season of your life.

It was almost impossible to narrow this gallery down. Every image told another piece of their story, and the love between these three was simply beautiful.

This is exactly why I encourage families to let go of the pressure to create the “perfect” family portrait.

The smiling at the camera photo is wonderful.

But so are the moments in between.

Let’s skip the pressure and simply spend an evening together outdoors.

We’ll wander a local park.

Watch your little ones explore.

Laugh.

Play.

Snuggle.

Love on each other.

I’ll take care of preserving everything else.

This year, as we celebrate 250 years of the United States, I’m reminded that history isn’t only found in textbooks. It’s quietly unfolding in moments like these.

One day, this little navy dress won’t fit anymore.
Those tiny fingers won’t reach for sunflowers.
That sweet grin will be replaced by braces, driver’s licenses, graduations, and a life all her own.

Photographs become the bridge between who our children are today and the memories we’ll treasure tomorrow.

Summer has a way of slipping through our fingers before we realize it. The sunsets get a little earlier. The flowers fade. The little faces change.

Don’t wait for the “perfect” season of life.
