A new baby is a big emotional shift for everyone. Older siblings can feel unsure, jealous, or a little lost in all the newborn attention—and honestly, that’s completely normal. During your newborn session, I always photograph your older child on their own (usually while the baby is feeding or getting a diaper change).

This gives your big kid a moment to feel special and seen—and you get beautiful portraits of their personality in this season of life. Win-win.

Go in with low expectations (Trust Me, This Is a Good Thing)
This might not be what you want to hear, but if your two-year-old decides they absolutely will not hold the baby or sit sweetly next to them… that’s just reality. Toddlers are tiny humans with very big opinions. Go into your session with a patient, positive, “whatever we get is what we get” mindset, and you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the magic that happens.

I’ve seen it over and over again: kids feed off their parents’ energy. If you’re tense and stressed, they feel it. If you’re calm and encouraging, they relax. Praise every ounce of cooperation your toddler gives—because even one second of sitting still deserves a standing ovation.

Safety comes first when we are photographing your baby. Always! Baby-led posing avoids risky or uncomfortable positions, which means less stress on tiny bodies and a safer experience overall. Your newborn is not a doll, but a human being and should be treated with respect!

If your baby wants to sleep, we let them sleep! If your baby seems more alert and awake, that’s ok! We can still photograph your baby and family with the style of portraits I make. This allows shorter session times and less stressed out babies and parents.

All of that uniqueness is able to come out when I photograph your baby in a simple, natural way…like the way they tuck their arm up by their face or have funny, little toes, or the rolls…oh the rolls!! I can still remember that blow away feeling of seeing my newborn baby next to my toddler baby! How and when did that toddler get so big!? They are my baby!

That’s why I think it is so fun and important to photograph your older children with your teeny tiny newborn baby.

I absolutely adore photographing children. I love that their expressions aren’t forced or fake! They give you exactly what they are feeling.

Sometimes I photograph kids that are curious and inquisitive about what’s happening. Sometimes I photograph kids that are animated! Sometimes the kids I photograph are shy or skeptical.

I am here for all the emotions and expressions.

February is my birthday month! It’s often an overlooked and sometimes criticized month because some feel like it has nothing to offer. Those people are wrong! It’s the best month! I mean…28 days…sometimes 29! Weird, right?

This year, I wanted to do something super fun…introducing {My} Birthday Baby Mini Sessions!

What is this and what does it mean? It means, did life get super hectic and overwhelming during the newborn stage and you never had photos taken?

Is your baby approaching their 1-year mark (lucky Aquarius baby) and you’re feeling super sentimental about how much they have changed and and are no longer your little baby (they’ll always be your baby!)?

Can siblings come to a newborn session? Ummm…YES!

Even though your newborn or toddler might not be sure about this whole sibling thing…I promise they will be your favorite photos!

The number one photo every mom wants at the end of the day is a photo of all her kids together. I know as a mom myself, it’s what I want!

So yes, when you book a newborn session, be prepared for crazy toddler antics and maybe some reluctance…but know it will all be worth it!

My 7 year old hopped into my lap yesterday morning before we started getting ready for school. We rocked and talked and he laid his head down on my shoulder.

And it made me miss baby him so much! I don’t know how much longer he’s going to be willing to curl up in my lap and be content visiting with his mom, but I’ll take it for as long as I can!

And don’t get me wrong, 7 year old him is pretty neat too. The other day he was telling my husband and me about how January got its name (from the ancient Roman god, Janus, who had two faces…one looking back and one looking forward into the future.) And this was after he got breakfast for himself and his two sisters without being asked.

Bring a mom is pretty darn cool!
