I wasn't born with a camera in my hand, but I grabbed one as soon as I could! I became interested in photography at a fairly young age. My older brother developed my black and white pictures in his basement darkroom. My subjects were whatever would stand still in front of me (and a few things that wouldn't). Mostly horses and dogs, and other kids. Funny, these remain my favorite subjects some 40 y

ears later. My first "serious" camera was purchased for me by my wonderful husband, in December of 1981, for my 20th birthday. It was a Canon SLR and I felt like I had just won the lottery. I held an amazing piece of machinery in my hand, and it was both wonderful and scary at the same time. It had so much potential, could I step up my game to unlock that potential? The first image I captured with that camera is still burned into my memory. We were at the National Finals Rodeo in Oklahoma City. Since that time, I have taken hundreds of thousands of images. For myself, for my family, for friends, books and magazines, and as editor of the local newspaper and two national magazines. I always see my world through a lens, even when I'm not holding a camera. I have always been the one behind the camera. Thank you to my husband and partner, Kent, who is the major reason I am able to do what I do. He is my best friend, my biggest supporter and in charge of all things technical when it comes to equipment. It’s an incredible honor to be asked to organize and capture this memory from the Mountain States Stockdog Association 2026 National Finals. Every person in this photo helped make the week an amazing event. This is the largest competition of stockdogs and handlers in the nation with nearly 200 handlers traveling from all over the US and Canada to compete for championship buckles.

The future is here. The Mountain States Stockdog Association
National Finals always offers a Juniors Class for the youngsters who are interested in following in the footsteps of their parents or grandparents. Some have never worked a dog before, some are competing in other classes. The fun these kids have during this class is such a joy to see! You can bet I'll be keeping these photos for the day when one of these young guns wins the Open Championship.

Well, I've been punchin' pictures for six days now, and they are finally complete! All the working shots from the Mountain States Stockdog Association 2026 National Finals held last week in Afton, Wyoming are ready! Clients should have received an email with a link to their gallery or galleries if they had multiple dogs. All that remains to be edited and uploaded are the Junior photos and a group of candids captured throughout the week. Those should be up within 24 hours. Clients that signed up with me, if you don't get your email, check your filtered folder or get in touch with me. You can also just go to our website at www.xpranchphotography.com and order the photos directly from there.

Thank you all for trusting me to capture memories of your Finals again this year! I had many returning clients and some new faces that I hope to see again next year. What a week it was! I took and personally sorted through nearly 6,000 images, walked over 32 miles at the Finals from arena to arena, and have since put in over 40 hours of editing time to bring your photos to you as quickly as possible. I had some fun with the editing on several photos, successfully editing out a few unfortunately placed cow turds, some electric poles, a stop sign, panels, arena walls, a couple of handler legs, 😳 a couple of obnoxious birds, and a few spectators in the bleachers that weren't paying attention. I even removed one garbage truck and a skid steer just to see if I could. That might have been a late night project when I should have already gone to bed! 😆

Thank you to the Mountain States Stockdog Association for allowing me to be an official photographer again this year! Capturing photos at the country's largest stockdog event is a huge undertaking and I appreciate the chance to be a part of the action.

Stay tuned for a recap of some of my favorite images captured this year! And a huge thanks and a big hug to my husband Kent Herbel, who is always by my side and a great supporter and fixer of all things. 😘 He even built me a desk in the horse trailer to make the editing and uploading process easier. ❤️

Happy Sunday morning! The MSSA Finals wrapped up yesterday here in Afton. Thank you to everyone who trusted me to capture images of their week working their dogs. I have around 6,000 images to sort through and edit, once that process is all done and the keepers are uploaded, I’ll send emails with links for downloads.

The Awards photos will be uploaded on our website as well, if you purchased working shots throughout the week your award photos will be included. All others will be available for purchase. Thanks!
