Thomas Zimmerman - Art Photography

Thomas Zimmerman - Art Photography The story of rural life told one moment at a time. The farming artist page is about promoting my art photography.

When I create my art, I do so with the intent to make the viewer feel what I felt when I was really there in the moment. Living on the plains of Kansas, I am surrounded by Rural America and Agriculture, which are the major themes to my work.

My entry into the Aurora frenzy. I had no idea this was possible, and to be honest most of the times I shot the aurora it didn't excite me....because I couldn't see it with my eyes (or if I could it was BARELY).

Last night was different, bright, vivid, changing and flowing. What a show! I was on the way home from shooting a job in Hays and just had to stop by Ogallah and find a viewpoint, and then waited for some cattle trucks to drive by with their lights to give me some forground interest. I will note, the blue/teal notes you see in this photo I got by custom balancing white balance in camera, so to the eye most of what you saw was red/green, but I wanted to pull all the hues of colors I could in the final photograph.

"Emberfield"

Yesterday morning, before the world stirred here in Gove County Kansas, I slipped into the sorghum rows where the harvest had already begun its quiet surrender. The stalks—tall, brittle, and crowned with heavy seed heads—stood like sentinels in the half-light, their edges catching the first breath of dawn.

The sky didn’t just lighten. It ignited. A low ribbon of cloud drank the sun’s opening note, turning molten—copper bleeding into rose, then into a fierce, hushed gold. The field, still cloaked in frost, answered back: every dried leaf and broken stem etched in firelight.

I chased the moment when shadow and blaze collide—when the ordinary becomes a cathedral of light. This is Emberfield: Kansas in November, where the crop is cut, the sky is kind, and for one breath, time forgets to move.

I'm known for my Kansas images, but its always fun when one from abroad sells. This is from our trip to London 10 years ago. The coolest foggy night as we walked around London and hopped the subway from place to place.

Sunflowers have always felt like the soul of the Great Plains — turning their golden faces to the sun, standing tall in quiet defiance of the wind and time.

Fields like this are becoming harder to find, but when you do, they stop you in your tracks. Giant yellow heads lined up like nature’s own gallery, glowing beneath a Kansas sunset… it’s the kind of beauty that feels painted — but it’s real. And it’s ours.

This is Kansas, wild and stunning and full of fleeting wonders.

Titled "Kansas Van Gogh" and taken over 10 years ago. I can't wait for the sunflowers to bloom this year to try to match the feeling I had when I stood here in this moment in time. Its one I'll never forget.

Beneath the weight of a storm-tossed sky and the golden hush of ripening wheat, Dreamcatcher captures a moment that is unmistakably Kansas. This isn’t the Midwest flattened into stereotype — it’s the raw, unfiltered beauty of a state that holds poetry in its silence and drama in its skies. Kansas isn’t loud about its grandeur, but it doesn’t need to be. It reveals itself in subtle contrasts: the fury of a thunderhead rolling in against the calm dignity of a wheat field at sunset.

Too often dismissed as flyover country, Kansas quietly holds scenes like this — sacred, cinematic, and undeniably alive. You won’t find this kind of beauty packaged or pretentious. You’ll find it waiting in the stillness, where the wind tells old stories, and the horizon stretches out like a promise. This is the heartland in its truest form — if you know where to look.

Taken in Gove County, Kansas.
