Lastnight, I headed out to capture a few more images for my project “BEACONS”. I’m quite happy with these images. I have discovered something I wasn’t expecting when I started this project. With most photography projects you have time to explore and frame things to be perfect. This project, however, is a bit dangerous. Drunk drivers, random people out doing who knows what in the night, wild pigs. There’s some extra variables I am having to mindful of in this particular project. So, I find myself getting on location, framing my shot and then jumping back in the car. This is forcing me to be far more mindful and to have the image already developed in my mind before I am even parked.

Another addition to the project. This was taken the same night. At first I felt the sign was a bit too far away from the gas station, In retrospect, I am happy to include it. I think it removes a tiny bit of isolation from the image without taking away from the oppressiveness of the night around it.

This is an idea I’ve been kicking around for a year. Islands of humanity in the void of night. Lastnight at around 11, I drove out to one of my locations. And set up and quickly snagged this shot. When I edited it today I was a bit underwhelmed. But after messing with it a bit, I think the idea is 75% there. What do you think?

This Image is easily one of my favorite images I have ever taken. This is of the the Gillis W. Long Bridge in Alexandria, LA. A few years after this image was taken, I met a bartender who told me that she, 7 years previous, had jumped from a neighboring bridge into this very river in an attempt to end her life. When she was pulled to shore, her rescuers told her, the river was practically still when it should have been running heavily at that time. If it had been she would have been pulled down stream rapidly to her death. She now spends her free time delivering speeches about su***de and tries to lead others to Christ.
