Glad I was able to make it back to the sunflower field this week! This will probably be my last visit of the season. Some of the flowers have started to wilt, but there were still plenty in full bloom. Lots of goldfinches, too! 🌻

Met a local celebrity this weekend! This stunning Painted Bunting has made Dix Park his seasonal home for several years now, and I saw him for the first time this past weekend. It was so awesome to observe and photograph this beautiful little bird. Lifer! 🙌

I spotted this Black Vulture the other day perched beneath a canopy of trees. As rain filtered through the leaves, I sat with it for a few minutes and watched as it stretched one of its wings. See those white lines in the feathers? That's the rachis (pronounced RAY-kiss), the long, central part of a feather. Think of it as the mast that holds the sails on a ship.
