I just spent some time this morning reliving my childhood memories. Jeri Ellen went to the Farmer's Market and got freshly pulled string beans. In my grandmother Tyson's house they were known as snaps. Grandaddy always had a huge garden. Fresh vegetables were necessary and picking them was so much fun for a child of 6 or 8. We'd eat tomatoes off the vine like apples and he would burst watermelons on the ground so we could get a handful of the sweet flesh inside.
So, this morning I wasn't on my grandmother Tyson's porch snapping snaps. I was in my recliner in the living room. It didn't matter because in my mind I was on that porch in Wendell listening to Grandmama and Momma talking and laughing.
Now I have the aroma of snaps in cooking meat, turned down to low heat, boiling very slowly. When they are nearly done I'll throw in little potatoes. If only I could make Grandmama's skillet cornbread! The recipe is in heaven with her.
