We begin this 2001 railroad journey in Illinois, where Illinois Central (CN) trains encounter a tunnel at East Dubuque. Then we head to Joliet to view fast mainline action on the old Santa Fe. Metra trains also pass two towers still standing today! Electric traction locomotives on the Iowa Traction are featured, along with I&M Rail Link trains before the IMRL was purchased by Cedar America Rail Holdings. To finish our show, we stop in Wisconsin to see Canadian Pacific trains encounter the tunnel at Tunnel City. These scenes were from our show, Trains Across the Midwest, Volume 2.

In our continuing series, BNSF, Along the Route of the Santa Fe, videographer Kenn Oberneder and Marshall Beecher take us on a journey across Illinois capturing intense train action on BNSF’s Chillicothe Subdivision. This sub runs from the Windy City through the rich farmlands and rolling hills of northern Illinois to the western terminal of Fort Madison, Iowa on the Mississippi River. We set up our camera in several locations to document the last of the Santa Fe style cantilever signals that were found in several towns along the line before they were replaced with new LED signals.

A Chicago and North Western SD40–2 leads a loaded ballast train through a golf course in Dellwood Minnesota on Canadian Pacific Withrow subdivision. This scene was recorded in the year 2000 when the line was also hosted trains of the Wisconsin Central.

It’s summer in 1997 as we catch this Dakota and Iowa loaded rock train heading south in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. At this time, the D&I was using former Milwaukee Road GP9 locomotives. Watch as the train struggles to climb the grade on the south side of Sioux Falls.

This video takes us back to 1997 to 2000. First, we get a few shots of the Dakota and Iowa hauling rock from Sioux Falls to Harrisburg. At this time, the D&I was using ex Milwaukee Road GP9 locomotives! Then we chase some trains on the Wisconsin Central between New Brighton, MN and Junction City, Wisconsin. Not only do we see a WC train led with an FP45, but many other trains that traversed the line with Chicago & North Western and Southern Pacific power! We head to northeast North Dakota to catch the action on a newly formed shortline in 2006. The Dakota Northern operates over ex-BNSF tracks from Grafton to Walhalla, North Dakota. We capture this line only months after its birth to watch as rebuilt GP10's take care of moving grain, potatoes, coal and ethanol. The railroad even treated us to adding the Minnesota Northern's caboose to the train! This is Granger Railroading at its best! Jointed rail, farm fields, 1st generation diesels, and a caboose!!!
