Many special movements are captured in this video including a Light Rail Special in the Twin Cities. C. Vision cameras were also on hand to document an Operation Lifesaver Special on the BNSF. Regional railroads Twin Cities & Western and Dakota Minnesota & Eastern also appear running special trains. The unique moves were led with GP38-2’s, a GP20 Cat, and big power in the form of a SD70M and C44-9W.

In volume one of our two part series we will examine several rail operations of the region, mainly within the state of Illinois. Locations included are Blue Island, Harvey Junction, Riverdale, the Dolton area, a brief glimpse of the Chicago Rail Link, and then we will work our way east towards many locations just inside the Illinois/Indiana border. A few scenes in the Hoosier state will be seen in our look at some South Shore operations and the final segments at Hohman Avenue and Hammond, Indiana.

The Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe’s main line from Chicago to Los Angeles is one of America’s major rail arteries. Photographer Fred Crissey captures action on the Santa Fe from 1982 to 1988 showcasing this classic railroad’s operations through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and Colorado. We revisit University Junction in the summer of 2009. BNSF and Canadian Pacific are the dominant railroads through here, along with transfer trains from the Union Pacific and Canadian National. We also take you to another interesting spot near University Junction: the St. Anthony overpass that spans BNSF’s 35th Avenue Yard. At this location, you will see plenty of yard and main line activity including a Canadian National transfer with an Elgin Joliet and Eastern SD38-2. University Junction was also very busy in the summer of 2009 with Minnesota’s first commuter rail train. C. Vision cameras captured several of the trains testing operations before it began service in November.
