Meanwhile, I'm happy to report to all the neighborhood Osprey nest-watchers that our baby Osprey is still at the nest! He hunkers down and becomes nearly invisible but will pop up when a parent flies over-head.

A waterlogged Osprey loses buoyancy and will find it difficult, maybe even impossible, to lift out of the water or to fly. When I saw this Osprey hit the water in the usual feet-first dive, I grabbed my camera so I'd be ready if it launched out of the water with a big fish. . .but, not only did it not have a fish, it didn't launch out of the water. Instead, it flopped/swam to shore. A passing boat created large waves that the exhausted Osprey had to battle as it approached the rip rap. I thought it must be a juvie just learning to dive/fish. . .Eventually, it made it to shore and high enough on the rip rap to avoid the splashing waves. There, it perched for hours, occasionally shaking and flapping its wings, preening and resting before finally flying up to a sunny branch on a nearby tree.

Later with my glasses on, I realized it was an adult Osprey--making the behavior more unusual and concerning. Was it injured? Sick? I don't know. I'll be keeping an eye out for it and will know (if there's a next time) that it may need help. . .

Testing out a new camera lens with an obliging subject: a young Great Blue Heron. If you look closely at the last picture, you can see the nictitating membrane--a third eyelid which works as a windshield wiper to clean, moisten and protect the eye from dust and wind while still allowing light/sight through.

On this morning, I had just a 2 minute window to catch the sun peeking through a thoroughly cloudy sky. It was enough.

After seeing the Tangier water tower straight across the Bay from Bay Escape for a dozen years, I finally got to see it and the rest of Tangier Island up close and personal (Thank you, Blaine/Beth Altaffer!)! About 13 miles out in the open Bay, it's a fascinating little island (just 740 acres), tied to the crabbing industry and accessible only by boat or small plane. Discovered by Capt. John Smith in 1608, its residents speak with an accent from 17th century Elizabethan-rooted English that is unique to the island. Unfortunately, the Island is experiencing severe erosion with 65% of its landmass lost due to sea level rise and erosion: it loses 7-9 acres of land to the Chesapeake Bay every year.

This morning I had a quick photo shoot with the young Osprey in the nest near Bay Escape (this is the "delayed" nest due to a Canadian Goose-occupation in early Spring). I didn't see any "wingercizing" that would suggest he/she is preparing to fledge just yet so that may be a bit away still. Also didn't see the second juvie that was present previously. Perhaps the second one was hunkered down in the nest this morning or perhaps something happened to it. I'm hoping to capture one of the parents visiting the nest before this young one fledges. . .If successful, I'll post!

A little over a week ago, I saw this vessel slowly moving up the Chesapeake Bay. A bit of research yielded details: it's an art boat..."a transient vessel for the creation of art and exchange of ideas in a fluid world," based out of New Haven, CT.
