โUntil one has loved an animal, a part of oneโs soul remains unawakenedโ - Anatole France, Nobel Laureate, 1921.
Have you read โWest with Giraffesโ? I highly recommend it ๐ค
Compassion and understandingโฆthis is the bond between a human and an animal. I respect that SO much! And I like how compassion is a huge part of this relationship and not because they speak our language, but because they donโt have to!!!
How truly wonderful it is that their trust on us is quiet! And that their affection is honest! And that their love is given without conditions! As I am writing this, I canโt help but tear up a lotโฆcompassion is really beautiful!
A Highland cow does not choose lightly who he feels safe beside. These gentle souls are deeply sensitive! When he walks toward his person, it is not obedience. It is trust! A trust built through patience, kindness, consistency, and care.
To love an animal is to understand responsibility. They depend on us for comfort, safety, nourishment, and gentleness. And in return, they offer something extraordinary: their complete vulnerability! (Again the tears!) They recognize our footsteps. They wait for our presence. They rest peacefully knowing we will not harm them.
There is beauty in the relationship between Whiskey and his owner. She brushes his coat so gently, they look into each others eyes fully understanding their love for one another! These moments may seem small to others, but they are enormous acts of connection!
And perhaps that is one of the greatest honors a person can receiveโฆ to be trusted by a creature who owes the world nothing, yet chooses to love anyway (ok, I am fully crying now).
