Garden Picking FAQ

Hi neighbors! Many of us have never picked our own produce before, which is awesome! I'm so happy I get to show you the ropes. Here are some things to be aware of to make the process smoother:

Don't step on garden beds: We can't walk on garden beds because that compacts the soil and makes it harder for plants to grow. Plus, there's a risk we'll step on plants or veggies that we can't see! When walking in the garden, please make sure to ask me how to get where you'd like to go.

Be respectful of time: We all know how frustrating it can be to show up to a doctor's appointment only to have to wait! It's the same for visiting the garden. Please arrive on time. No shows are not cool. I'm a person with stuff going on just like you! We also need to make sure we keep all visits to a maximum of 30 minutes. I'll remind you a few minutes before we have to pack up and head out.

Leave some for others: Please don't pick all the produce! We need to make sure to leave enough for the next people. I'll go over how many we can pick before y'all show up. Please monitor your children. I'm not going to stand over your shoulder and count (because that's no fun!) so adults are in charge of keeping track.

Picking can be hard: Anything new can be difficult! Keep at it, follow instructions, and you'll get it!

Donations: They can be made in cash or via Venmo. I don't have change or other apps.

Critters and tripping: Gardens are full of critters! This is a GOOD thing. Sometimes we get to the garden in the morning and critters have decided to eat some of our veggies... it happens. There are also lots of things on the ground to navigate. Please note that there is always a risk of getting stung or tripping. By showing up at my house you are stating that you understand these risks and agree to indemnify me for any and all accidents or harm that may befall participants during picking.

I am a person: Hi, it's me! Your neighbor. Just a friendly reminder that I'm a person. I spend about two hours EVERY day working on my garden in one way or another. The donations are super helpful, and they do not cover the costs of my garden at all. So this is really something I do because I hope to inspire others to garden as well—and to appreciate nature! Please don't take advantage of my good will. Thank you!

Looking forward to meeting you!

Warmly,
Mollie

FAQ: What Goes Into Choosing Plants?

1. Color
Explanation: Color plays a crucial role in landscaping as it sets the mood and tone of a garden. Landscapers consider the color palette of the plants to ensure a harmonious and visually appealing garden. They might choose complementary colors for a vibrant look or analogous colors for a more serene effect.

2. Texture
Explanation: The texture of plants refers to the surface quality of leaves and stems, which can be smooth, rough, shiny, or matte. Different textures add depth and interest to the garden. Landscapers mix various textures to create a dynamic and engaging landscape.

3. The Height Each Plant Says It Will Get
Explanation: Landscapers pay attention to the expected mature height of plants as indicated on labels. This helps in planning the garden's layout, ensuring taller plants don't overshadow shorter ones and that each plant gets adequate light and space.

4. The Height I Personally Have Seen Each Plant Get
Explanation: Personal experience with plant heights is valuable. Landscapers often rely on their observations to make informed choices, especially if local conditions cause plants to grow differently than expected.

5. Your Sun Requirements
Explanation: Sunlight is a critical factor for plant health. Landscapers assess the garden's exposure to sunlight (full sun, partial shade, or full shade) and select plants that will thrive under those conditions.

6. Space
Explanation: The available space in a garden determines the number and types of plants that can be used. Landscapers consider both the current size and the mature spread of plants to prevent overcrowding and ensure each plant has room to grow.

7. How Much Money You Want to Spend
Explanation: Budget constraints influence plant selection. Landscapers work within the client's budget to choose plants that offer the best value for money, balancing cost with aesthetic and functional goals.

8. How Quickly Each Plant Will Grow
Explanation: Growth rate is important for achieving the desired look within a certain timeframe. Fast-growing plants can provide quick results, while slow-growers are chosen for long-term stability and structure.

9. Wildlife
Explanation: Attracting or deterring wildlife can be a goal in landscaping. Landscapers select plants that support local wildlife, such as pollinators and birds, or choose species that are resistant to pests.

10. Time of Flowering
Explanation: Flowering time affects the garden's appearance throughout the seasons. Landscapers stagger the planting of different species to ensure continuous blooms and year-round interest.

11. Soil Type
Explanation: Soil type (clay, sandy, loamy) influences plant health. Landscapers assess the soil and select plants that will thrive in the existing conditions or amend the soil to meet the needs of desired plants.

12. Water
Explanation: Water requirements vary among plants. Landscapers choose plants with similar water needs to ensure efficient irrigation and prevent overwatering or drought stress.

13. Purpose and Function
Explanation: The intended use of the garden (e.g., relaxation, entertainment, play) influences plant selection. Landscapers choose plants that serve the garden's function, such as providing shade, creating privacy, or adding fragrance.

14. Maintenance
Explanation: Maintenance requirements are crucial for plant selection. Landscapers consider the client's willingness and ability to maintain the garden, choosing low-maintenance plants for those who prefer less upkeep and more labor-intensive plants for avid gardeners.

15. Availability
Explanation: The availability of plants can affect their selection. Landscapers consider what plants are readily available from local nurseries and suppliers to ensure timely and cost-effective installation.

16. Aggressiveness of Plants
Explanation: Landscapers also consider the level of aggressiveness when choosing plants. Aggressive native plants can be beneficial because they fill space quickly, helping to establish a garden faster and reduce the growth of unwanted weeds. However, these plants can out-compete and even kill other species that you may want to keep. To manage this, landscapers use strategies like planting aggressive species in less-than-ideal conditions. For example, if a particularly aggressive plant thrives in full sun, planting it in partial shade can help curb its growth. By carefully considering and balancing these factors, landscapers can ensure that aggressive plants are beneficial without overwhelming the rest of the garden.

By considering these factors, landscapers create beautiful, functional, and sustainable gardens tailored to their clients' needs and preferences.
