This is such a great post about copyright and copyright infringement.
Do you know what copyright is? Copyright refers to the legal right of the owner of intellectual property.
For those who are curious, I am talking mainly about a photographers’ image they create, sell, or maybe give to clients. Any image a photographer takes, they own. It is their creative vision, they own all rights, even if the subject is a friend, client or relative. Did you know it is copyright infringement to take any image and repost it, print it, or even submit it to a designer without permission?
I have so many stories from friends and myself about images being stolen, or used without consent. Many take an image from FB or elsewhere and use it for personal reasons, cover photo, print or even submitting to a designer.
I put my watermark on my images small because I don’t want to distract from the subject or the beauty of the image. Watermarks, of course can be removed, cropped and covered up. I am not talking about reposting the original post on Facebook. If the image is taken without the original post or text and put in a new post without credit, that is copyright infringement. Copyright infringement occurs when a copyrighted work is reproduced, distributed, performed, publicly displayed, or made into a derivative work without the copyright owner’s permission.
With that being said - please do not do it. It makes photographers work twice as hard, they put into an image and we rely on our work to get new customers and new business. Thank you.
