Part 2
Tata used to visit us in the states every couple of years during our summers, their winters. He never spoke a word of english but did not seem bothered by it. He would stay with us and find employment by doing landscaping work. Now, he didn't need to do this but tending to a garden is his universal language. He is always working on something. What amazes me about his visits is that he would take me on walks for hours without ever getting lost. I remember asking him once how he would get us back home. He told me, "The trees tell me. I know where to turn because I remember what kind of tree is there." Seven year old Stephanie, walking the streets of Arlington, had no idea what he was talking about. What I did know was he was strong, intelligent, creative, and hardworking. I wanted to work beside him in the garden. I was inspired to create, grow, and learn when I was with him. Best of all is that he never made me feel small. I was more of a side kick. A friend. His first granddaughter who he would affectionately call "Regalona".

(Part 1) Earlier this year our family took a 10+ hour trip to Santiago, Chile. This was Isaiah's second flight, Eli's first. It was an amazing trip that I am so grateful to have experienced.
I have culled + edited my pictures from this trip months ago but was not ready to share...
Chile has always been a grounding place for me, a time capsule, a reminder of my childhood. This trip felt special + different.
My grandparents and uncle welcomed us with open arms, this time my aunt was not there at our arrival. Her passing was hard for the entire family, my grandparents in particular. A reminder to us that every moment, day, year is a gift. We treated this trip as such. A gift to them, to us, and to our children. My grandfather is 90 years old and I now have 32 years of his love and care that have impacted the core of my life. These next few posts will be incredibly long but full of reflections of the accumulation of those years.

Will I ever get better at posting my sessions on social media?
Probably not.

Nonetheless, here's a glimpse from my spring session with my favorite realtor (Rachel Starke) in The Fan.

Who knew The Fan was this charming?!

1/25 I’ve known T since she was 2. She mostly avoids all cameras and posed situations but even she couldn’t resist the, ”whatever you do, don’t look at the camera!” 😄

1/24 Tuesdays are for Tinkergarten ❤️ There are few things that make me happier than watching my kids play in the woods, splash in puddles, make pretend tea, and drink real tea.

(Also, let’s pretend I didn’t miss Sunday and Monday 🫠 I was not my best self on both days… so... yeah)

1/21 When I asked my grandfather one year what made him the happiest I wasn’t truly sold on his answer all those years ago.

“This…” he said with a hose in his hand, “watering my flowers. That’s what makes me happiest.”

I didn’t have a garden of my own back then. I couldn’t imagine a chore could bring you happiness...
Now that I’m a mother (and have a garden of my own) I can see the truth in that statement. I can see the parallels of parenting and gardening all too well. Those daily investments of time, consistency, love, care, showing up, and many times….chores.
HARD doesn’t mean BAD. In fact, for me, the most beautiful things are often hard.
