The Shoosmith landfill in Chester,Va is a bankrupt private landfill that has been an environmental problem for decades is now close to being a toxic disaster. The landfill creates 10s of thousands of gallons of toxic leachate daily and that is stored on site and has been leaking into Swift Creek and Piney Branch which both lead to the Appomattox and then to the James River. Estimates are that it will cost almost $200 million for a more permanent fix and with the owners in bankruptcy the costs will probably be passed on to taxpayers. Hopefully this will be addressed immediately before it becomes a true environmental disaster.
