Instagram image for the week - https://www.instagram.com/naturesfinestimages/ Here's an old one from back in my film days. Some photo buddies and I hired a tour guide to take us out to this area in Monument Valley, AZ for a sunrise. If you look closely, you can see small tracks in the sand.

Instagram image for the week - https://www.instagram.com/naturesfinestimages/ Here's one from several years ago showing a clearing storm at sunset with the San Juan range in Colorado. Not long after I took this image the full moon rose directly behind Mt. Sneffels. It was one of those incredible evenings where everything came together.

Instagram image for the week - https://www.instagram.com/naturesfinestimages/ Here's an older image from back in my 8x10 large format days. This is Rifle Falls State Park located north of Rifle, CO. Since tourism has greatly increased at these falls in the past few decades, they now have a barrier up and you can no longer get this exact shot.

Instagram image for the week - https://www.instagram.com/naturesfinestimages/ This is one of the more famous areas in the San Juan Mountains of SW Colorado. It's currently in the burn area of the Gold Mountain fire. Everyone is hoping it remains untouched but it's highly unlikely. Chimney Peak is the spire type rock and the meadow is referred to as either Deb's Meadow or Kate's Meadow. It's famous for being one of the last scenes in the John Wayne movie True Grit.

Being Thankful. Instead of posting my weekly Instagram image, I'm going to share some images I've taken over the years from areas currently in the Gold Mountain Fire area per the Watch Duty app. No photos will truly convey the feeling of being able to experience these locations in person.

I am extremely thankful for being able to explore and photograph these areas since the late 1980's and also for being able to live outside of Ridgway since 2012. Never take Mother Nature for granted. If you've also been able to go and experience these areas - be thankful.

Even if the fire does destroy the vegetation in a lot of these areas, be thankful that it's not going to be a total loss. No matter what, the mountains will still be there, the streams and waterfalls will still flow, the sunsets and sunrises will still happen, the vegetation will start to recover eventually, and the beauty will be there. You may have to look a little harder but trust me, you'll find it.

Instagram image for the week - https://www.instagram.com/naturesfinestimages/ This was the only time I've camped at Alta Lakes in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado. It was absolutely dead calm and people were running from their campsites to witness this reflection. Sometimes you get lucky.
