As much as I love shooting wildflowers in Crested Butte, nothing beats the scenery in the high country of the Colorado San Juan Mountains. Indian paintbrush, an alpine steam and a gorgeous mountain back drop in one of the most gorgeous areas high above Silverton.

Had two mama-bear-and-cub sightings in this same spot over the last couple weeks, so I drove back up hoping round three was the charm. No bear today. But the marmot family that lives in this rock pile didn’t seem to mind the company, a couple of ground squirrels and a bunny came out to check on me, and the first columbines of the season were already open. Not the shot I drove up for, but I’ll take it.

Lupine fields in Summit County 🪻

I usually come here in early June to photograph the wildflowers, but this year’s drought has hit the blooms hard — this exact field barely has any lupines right now. Glad I caught it when I did.

23 years. Thousands of flight hours. Countless students trained on the CH-47 Chinook. Today, my hubby Jim flew his last flight as an instructor pilot at HAATS — the High Altitude Army Aviation Training Site in Gypsum, Colorado — before heading into retirement.

HAATS trains military helicopter pilots from across the country and allied nations in the unique challenges of high-altitude and mountain flying, skills that are critical for operations in places like Afghanistan.

Tradition says the pilot — and the bird — get a proper soaking after that final flight, and I was so honored to be there to capture it.

So proud of you, babe. Here’s to the next chapter. ❤️
