The young fawns and older bucks are roaming the woods of the Midwest these days. Said fawns still have their spots at these barely venture away from their mothers, still timid of what lies outside of the woods. The veteran bucks, however, are anxiously waiting for the rut to start in a few months, trying to claim their territory. Last night I saw over 20 fawns and well over 30 bucks on a Deer Drive around the area I live in eastern Minnesota. I’m no hunter, but I did shoot some really nice deer with my camera last night!

Me and My Guardian Angel
It’s been 3 years since my Aurora chasing partner, Adventure seeking buddy, and best friend left this world. I miss him dearly still to this day, wishing he was still in my life, to see how I’ve grown and enjoy the adventures I’ve been doing these 3 years. Even though he’s longer here, I still see him, like he’s checking in with me. During last November’s strong geomagnetic storm I was able to hangout with my Stinky Cheese again. I always love getting photos with him during these magical displays, this one just happens to be my favorite. Come back soon Hank, from your Douglas.

Being out under the stars can be a bit overwhelming. Looking into the Heavens that are over our heads, places we’ll never experience, worlds that may be out there, all in the vastness of outer space. But it’s also one of the most beautiful experiences I’ve ever had. Seeing all those galaxies and capturing photos of them has been a highlight of not just my photography journey but also my entire life!

Isle Royale National Park is home to some of the darkest skies in the world. I would stay up late on our trips to get shots of the stars and or Northern Lights while much of North America was asleep, making for some of my favorite memories of my life. On our most recent trip I was lucky enough to get a break in the clouds/smoke to get a lovely single exposure of the Milky Way core over the typical landscape on the island. Dark skies, great views, and waters full of the best tasting lake trout in the world; how could it get any better?!

A bit of peaceful tranquility for you from the lovely far northwest side of Isle Royale. The wildflowers were in bloom and the sun was out nicely. Wishing you cool temps and nice rainy nights oh my Northwoods. Get better soon.

Back to my favorite place in the world I go. Will I get something cool to photograph? Yes! Isle Royale National Park is full of so many amazing things that you can’t really find at other National Parks. I mean it is the largest island on the largest lake in the world. See you all next Monday!

Allow me to cool you down. It’s going to be 100°F here in the Midwest next week for a few days, least the predictions say. This photo is from a trip I did this last January to Grand Marais when the temp never got above -5°! It did create some amazing photo opportunities like this seasmoke that surrounded the lighthouse during sunrise.

Isle Royale Week.
The permits have been pulled and Lake Superior is ready for us as ever. Next weekend I head back to my favorite place in the world, Isle Royale. Before every trip I get the same excitement I felt Christmas Eve; the anticipation grows as I get closer to our departure to the largest island on the largest lake in the world. This place is a paradise for me. From the amazing photography opportunities to the even better fishing I can’t imagine a more perfect spot. I hope for something cool to happen again on this trip, and will share whatever photo(s) I get with you all after it’s over. Here’s a favorite shot of the Hanks Haven parked at one of the many docks situated around the island. This is from mid-October 2024 when we had the island all to ourselves!
