“Adopting my grandson wasn’t something I had planned, but I wanted to do it. It wasn’t easy, but I did it, and the process went quickly. People need to understand that these kids are the ones who are suffering—it’s not their fault, and we need to step in to help them. Foster care is only a temporary solution; they need a place to call home.” 🏠 – Claudia Wechter, Riverside County adoptive parent

"Dismantling the Fourth Estate"... I have more good memories than bad, the connections made are life long, some of us were in the trenches together, and we're survivors. The devil is in the details. I cannot implore how the details will bring the package together, if I could implore on other photographers: find the close-up. These details are from my iPhone with the hipstamatic app...to me they convey the mood I felt when I was shooting this project. It was an emotional journey indeed, for obvious reasons (going to work in a place for 27 years and seeing it go away, physically and metaphorically) there were also some personal issues that I may never speak. We all made it out though.

Lights hanging from the lobby ceiling, lift with your legs sign near the press room, the old door to the roof before the addition in the '60s near Tim's office, the stairwell into the basement office (features was moved there when we needed the space).

"Dismantling the Fourth Estate"...apologies for the recent delay, it's so funny how life gets in the way. First day photo of the Hays and Culver offices on main floor. The cashier booth, when I used to work at the Fox Theater, I would meet with Fred Peltz and get our movie schedule squared away for the week and pay at this window in around 1977. Painting with light in the photo dark room, know as the Wing Lynch room. Also ink on the walls in the basement. The conduit of wire sitting on the ground on the first level near the lunchroom. Workers gather ceiling panels in the news room.

..."Dismantling the Fourth Estate"... as a news photographer we were not able to do much in news situations, except to live by the "f8 and be there " rule. We were (and still are) held to the ethical rule of not setting up situations, albeit portraits...I was fortunate to be able to capture a photo in 1990 of what I still refer to as 'a bunch of soldiers getting on a plane'. The photo ended up running double truck in LIFE Magazine, and was voted the photo of the century at the Press-Enterprise in 2000...an honor I still hold dear, though it is just a bunch of guys getting on an airplane...
..in the art world, when it's a little more carte blanch I was able to place the photo, a really dingy kinda beat up version that I guess is apropos for the setting wherever I chose. This is on the first floor of the newspaper, the newsroom was upstairs, the former lunchroom is in the background with circulation toward to left...my dear friend from college would always, and still does, ask is it art?
..the second photo is a sleepy eyed selfie in the downstairs mens bathroom, not sure it's art...

It's been a season, so pardon the interruption of..."Dismantling the Fourth Estate"...rainy days and Monday, even though it's a Tuesday...
..we were always a family even after the paper was no longer family owned...most of my best friends, had worked there, or were at least affiliated with it somehow. The connections we made...
.."what were you thinking" were the great leadership words uttered by Carlo Puma a long, long time back when he was working the night photo desk. I had come back with, some pretty crappy art, though to my defense it was a pretty delicate situation and would not have seen the light of day regardless...that is all I have to say to that. Carlos is as close or closer than my brother. That's what happened at the PE, you were in the trenches with your colleagues and a war was being fought if you walked away together, you would remain together.

When I was shooting this project in 2018, I kept tight lipped, I was greedy and wanted it all to myself, it was mine and only mine to f-up. There were still photos on the darkroom wall, which I thought was crazy, and intense. I was just shooting everything, no second chances. On the closer-up photo, there is an out of focus picture of Puma at left center, left of that is photo that was part of a picture story about a blind kid, that Carlos was working on, I think the top left photo and the bath photo are also part of the package, and I always assumed the bottom center photo was also part of the story...in a way it was part of the story, it is Carlos as a little kid, he had made a copy of the photo for his mom....
..I didn't find that out until the night of the opening of "In the Sunshine of Neglect".
