Literally being held together with tape at this point. My midwife and I both think I have a hernia right at my belly button most likely from having my gallbladder out during my first pregnancy.

The pain has been getting so constant and sever that unless I’m pushing the sides of my stomach together it hurts.

One of my moms suggested using some KT tape to do the pushing for me and so far it has worked amazingly well. I’ve had it on all day and have not had a single pain in my belly.

I no longer have a belly button and the tape is itchy in spots but oh man the relief from the stabbing in my belly is so great!

I heard all the time when I was pregnant with my first that I didn’t know the pain that was coming. That I was going to change my mind about getting an epidural or some other form of pain relief. So many people discouraging me from doing a non-medicated birth.

I’ll be very real with you I have nothing against epidurals or other forms of pain relief. People were right to an extent. There is pain and lots of it. For me I just can’t stand the needle 🤣 so that’s a me problem.

But my point in this is that yes, there is pain with childbirth. Always has been always will be. However the number of people constantly discouraging you and reminding you of that pain should not outnumber the people who are lifting you up and telling you how strong and how capable you are. Unfortunately that’s usually what happens.

To often we focus on the pain, the hardships, the challenges.

We need to be better about lifting up the women around us and reminding them daily that they were built for this. They are braver than they think and stronger than they know. Their bodies were made for birth and they absolutely can do this. That doesn’t mean you can’t get an epidural or have a csection or however you choose to birth. This is just me trying to take the focus away from the pain of birth and put it back where it belongs - on the strength of women.

The way our medical system operates in reference to birth is that it treats it as a medical emergency which in most cases it isn’t.

That isn’t to say that there aren’t times when it is a medical emergency. There are high risk pregnancies and sometimes things happen even in low risk pregnancies that our out of our control and can turn birth into an emergency.

In general though birth is something that women were made for. Our bodies were built for this and with the right help and support nothing can stop you from birthing the way you want.

It’s important to find a birth team that you can trust to help you make informed decisions about your birth. To help keep you from being pressured into unnecessary medical interventions or inductions.

Birth is NOT a medical emergency and you CAN do this!

Our bodies are absolutely amazing!! This is what happens when you have people around you supporting you and knowing what your body is built for and capable of ❤️

You are not: too fat, too petite, too athletic, not athletic enough. This woman is down a goddam leg, has a history of cancer and had had one previous cesarean. Yes, rarely weird things happen in bodies and birth and you’ll decide what’s right for you. But the truth is, the biology is pretty darn good and when we nourish the physiology and don't chip away at folks' confidence by constantly telling them all the reasons they can't... well, *odds are* your body can do it, too, if you want to. Again, while of course there are unique circumstances, *A LOT* of the time all the reasons why “not” given to you are based on nothing but biased view points and have nothing to do with science or facts.

Can you breastfeed while pregnant?
It’s actually a pretty common question and concern especially for those who still have a baby under 1 and have found out their expecting again.

The truth is that yes you absolutely can breastfeed while pregnant.

The main concern with breastfeeding while pregnant is that breastfeeding may cause mild uterine contractions. However this has been shown to have little to no effect on a pregnancy unless you had complications already or are considered a high risk pregnancy. The amount of oxytocin that’s released when breastfeeding isn’t enough to cause full contractions that could harm a growing fetus.

The other concern that I’ve heard brought up before is nutrition. This one can be harder to keep on top of if you suffer from sever morning sickness. However you only need to eat an addition 300-600 calories if you are breastfeeding depending on how much your child nurses.

I’ve included links below to some well respected sources regarding pregnancy, birth, and breastfeeding.

But you can put your mind at ease and know that breastfeeding while pregnant can be safe and there are many moms who describe the experience of breastfeeding while pregnant as a special an unique experience as you continue to support the growth of both your children with your amazing, capable body.

Me and my husband were discussing this the other day because I’ve suffered from post-partum depression and as a joke he said “who knows maybe that’s what’s wrong with me too” I told him that it was actually possible for men to have post-partum depression but that it present differently and I’d have to look it up for him. Here are some great facts about postpartum depression in dads as well as some tips for resources.

We need to educate ourselves and make sure that we are supporting dads too. We all remember the saying it takes two to tango and yet when it comes to care after the baby is born we seem to forget that second person and focus all attention on mom and baby. We need to remember that there’s still two people there whose lives are different and who have new things to worry and stress about not just one. Let’s work on remembering the dads.
