Standing above Hemlock Lake, St. Michael's Mission is one of the most remarkable historic landmarks in Livingston County.

The property's story begins in the late 1800s when Bishop Bernard J. McQuaid, the first Bishop of Rochester, acquired land overlooking the lake.

In 1926, the Divine Word Missionaries (SVD) established St. Michael's Mission on the site as a training school for young men preparing for missionary work.

Construction of the impressive seminary complex continued through the 1930s, with the main south wing completed in 1936. As enrollment grew, a north wing was added in 1957. During its peak in the 1950s, more than 250 students lived and studied here, preparing for service in missions around the world.

The grounds became famous for their hand-built stone grottos and outdoor Stations of the Cross, created by Brother Fridolin Iten.

These unique religious structures drew visitors from across the Rochester region.

Declining enrollment in the 1960s led to the seminary's closure, ending nearly four decades of missionary training on the hill above Hemlock Lake.

Though its purpose has changed over the years, St. Michael's Mission remains a striking reminder of a chapter in New York's religious and cultural history.
