Another recent session, I was pleased to shoot the beautiful woodturnings of Brian Newton. It is tricky stuff to photograph, he uses some very glossy finishing. The blue-green bowl is a composite of three separate images in order to control glare from the studio lights (5 lights in all).

Because some have asked... yes, I am still producing product photography for artists and crafts-persons. Image uses include juried-show applications, website and social media, publication in trade media, and enlargements / banners for art show booth decoration.

You're all set up and the shoot is cancelled... what to do? I've been wanting to get into photographing custom made knives so a little lighting practice seemed appropriate before tearing down the gear.

This is a deceptively complicated shot with three strobes (two with grids and one with a strip softbox), a diffuser panel and two reflector cards. The monorail camera with tilting front helped to put everything into the plane of focus.

I think it was a good use of the time!

Meeting different image requirements during the pandemic... with art shows cancelled, artists don't need new images for their show applications. Many are moving toward using social media more for selling. That opens up more opportunities to group items and add props to create an atmosphere. These new images feature jewelry by Robin Yates:

I'm trying out a new logo for watermarking my on-line photos. It's simply my initials "tjf" which I rendered in a somewhat art deco style. Thanks to Kat Fuss for creating the Adobe Illustrator file! There's a solid version but I'm playing around with PhotoShopping a chromed version like this.

Last week, we celebrated the 10th anniversary of launching our business and that seemed like a good enough reason to take the day "off". It was a working vacation day though... Watkins Glen State Park.
