The Yellow Door House - Documented April 2016, Northern Iowa

From the road, I never would have guessed that the best part of this house would be the front door. From the ceramic doorknob and pushbutton doorbell to the floral wood carvings and beautiful yellow color, it's impossible to think of this house as anything but the Yellow Door House.

If that wasn't enough to make this house memorable, the vultures circling the trees above certainly was. All it took was being dive bombed once for me to understand that this house has some secrets that it was prepared to keep.

Angie's Family Farm - Documented April 2016

After discovering my passion for abandoned buildings, my old neighbor and friend took me on a trip to Iowa to visit her families property. This beautiful brick home was nestled down in a valley, set far back from the road. Walking around, you couldn't help but feel how serene and secluded the property was.

Abandoned Swing Bridge - Documented June 2013

The Dan Patch Line Bridge, located in Savage Minnesota has a rich history dating back to 1910. This bridge was a visionary creation of Marion W. Savage, the owner of the legendary harness racing horse, Dan Patch. His plan was to use the railroad to bring passengers to the town of Savage so they could view his famous horse, thus being named the Dan Patch Line. This line would run from Minneapolis, all the way through Lakeville before finally ending in Northfield, Minnesota.

This distinctive bridge was designed as a center pivot swing bridge, allowing it to swing open when barges needed to navigate the Minnesota River and then swing closed to permit the passage of trains and later automobiles between Savage and Bloomington. Its dual functionality as a rail and road crossing made it a vital transportation link in the region.

Passenger service along the Dan Patch would end in 1942, but the highway portion of the bridge would remain open until the late 1970’s when it was closed due to rising rental fee’s and deterioration of the bridge from winter road salting. Despite occasional use in subsequent years, the bridge faced continued challenges from periodic flooding, barge impacts, and general wear and tear.

By 1982, trains were required to stop prior to crossing the bridge and proceed at “low speeds”. Repairs would be made but usage of the bridge would finally come to an end in 2007. Since its closure, the Dan Patch line has been at the front of many topics and debates from officials across the state. Interest lies specifically in the revitalization of the passenger rail services to provide affordable transportation to the southern suburbs.

As of 2023, while rail service to the Port of Savage via the Dan Patch Line Bridge has not yet commenced, ongoing discussions and funding requests highlight the enduring importance of this historic bridge in shaping the region's transportation future.

My First House - Original explore in 2010, documented images from 2012 and 2013 explores

After my grandpa showed up one snowy day in 2010 with my first DSLR camera, I immediately went out to find an abandoned house to photograph. Just a few miles outside of town, I came across this small farmhouse.

I am sad to say that I haven’t taken the time to research the history of this home until now. As special as it is being my first true “explore”, I just never looped back to it. Now I have an incredible story to share:

This expansive farm was owned by a passionate farmer who dedicated the better part of six decades to his two properties, totaling a few hundred acres in rural Minnesota. He was described as a farmer to his core but was also known for his kind heart. He served in the Vietnam war but never married and instead, dedicated his time to his farm and community. He was always donating to the local food shelf, the 4-H and his local church. But his kindness would live on long after his passing in April of 2014.

His first generous gift was in the form of 40 acres of land, that students at a local FFA could utilize to get hands on and work the land. But his biggest gift would come from the rest of his assets, which were sold and auctioned, including the rest of his land, equipment, livestock and other holdings. That money was to be given to the FFA students around the state of Minnesota and would eventually lead to the formation of the James W Tracy Scholarship in 2016. As of 2020, 81 scholarships had been awarded to students pursuing a degree in agricultural related fields., totaling $81,000.

Jim, as everyone knew him, recognized the importance of agriculture and the fact that many professionals in agriculture are reaching retirement age. His legacy was to ensure that his love of the land would live on in generations to come.

Estonian EV. Martin Luther Church - The First Estonian Church Built in North America (Documented 2016)

Established in 1907, this is the first Estonian church on record in North America. The land was deeded by Sig and Tena Heineman to a group of immigrants from the Baltic Nations that had settled in the area, for the purpose of supporting their faith. The property was later deeded to Evangelical Martin Luther, where the church gains it name, on July 16th, 1914. The church that was originally built is the same structure standing today.

When two prominent members of the church, the Pay brothers, decided to support a new church, almost all activity ceased to exist at the current church. It was a core wish of one of the founding fathers that the church always remain a landmark and reminder of Estonian roots in America. Unfortunately, attempts to restore the church have continued since the early 90's and so far have not been successful at a full restoration.

While driving through south central Minnesota, my dad and I stumbled upon this forgotten farm in June of 2013. I was immediately in love with the overgrowth surrounding all of the outbuildings. And that doesn't even begin to describe the beautiful wallpaper inside and the soft lighting in every room from the impending storm.

Sadly the home was demolished and a small manufactured house was built in its place. I would have loved to have seen this farmhouse restored.

The San Haven State Hospital, originally known as the North Dakota Tuberculosis Sanitarium was opened to the public in November of 1912. Located in the Turtle Mountains of Rolette County, it's location was chosen based on the thought that the higher altitude and drier atmosphere would be favorable to patients with tuberculosis (inspired by the Adirondack Mountains).

In the 1950’s, after antibiotics brought some control over the tuberculosis epidemic, the hospital remodeled, expanded, and ultimately opened its doors to the developmentally disabled and elderly. As with many state hospitals, rumors and questions regarding the treatment of it’s patients began to circulate and the hospital would eventually close in December of 1987 after a lengthy lawsuit.

A Brownsfield grant was recently awarded to the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa for "clean up" of the San Haven site. Totaling $1 million, this isn't the first time funds have been provided for demolition of the site.

The Book House

Located on a rural county road, this abandoned house quickly earned it's name upon entering the back door. Stacked along the walls, filling every possible shelf and lining the stairs, not a single room was missing books. This home sat on the corner of a property owned by Leonore and Lloyd Dickmann.

Lloyd, a veteran and avid reader, and Lenore, a trailblazing college professor and author, shared a profound passion for books. Starting with a small collection, their love of books eventually grew big enough to open a bookstore on their farm. The collection would continue to grow though and would eventually spread across more than a dozen buildings, including the old manure silo that Lloyd emptied and turned into the signature book castle of the Happy Tales Bookshop. It is estimated that their combined collection was over a million books.

After 58 years together, they left a conservationist legacy before both passing away in 2015. Now, Avalon Creek Farm preserves their memory, honoring their devotion to both books and nature through their efforts on the farm site.
