Juvenile male Ruby-throated Hummingbird from Friday - you can tell by the speckled pattern on the throat that will eventually become the iridescent red gorget of the mature male. We’re now getting lots of new hummers coming through, probably as they start their long southern migration.

Rare bird in Massachusetts this morning - a beautiful Bridled Tern, a lifer for me! This species is normally seen in tropical waters, and not often near land. The last documented sighting in Massachusetts was in 2024, 125 miles ESE of Nantucket.

Came across this little Wood Duck duckling this morning while kayaking on the Ipswich River. He was all alone and searching for his family. Hopefully he found them; we did come across a couple other wood duck families downstream (with upwards of 10 ducklings), so let’s hope 🤞.

Beautiful male Painted Bunting posed on a saw palmetto for me earlier this week in FL. It’s from the eastern of two populations in the US, that breeds in Georgia, South Carolina, and northern Florida, and was wintering in southern Florida. Unfortunately, this species is in decline, due to loss of habitat and, believe it or not, illegal poaching for the pet trade. For this reason I will not be sharing the specific location.

Black Vulture this evening, in with the largest flock of vultures I’ve ever seen. Most were turkey vultures, but probably 5-10% were black vultures.
