The Upper Floors: Spaces Lost in Transition

Five years ago, I had the rare opportunity to document a space caught between eras. At the time, the ground floor was a place of pulse and life. Active, loud, and social, while the floors above had sat in a silent, untouched vacuum for half a century.

I was granted access by the owner at the time, under a single condition: that I keep the location discreet. Though the building has since changed hands, that promise remains a debt of honor I intend to keep.

Reflecting on this photograph five years later, I feel a quiet satisfaction. For forty minutes, we reintroduced a pulse to a void. We brought light and motion into a silence that had been absolute for fifty years.

In a sense, we are not so different from this building. If we neglect our own foundations, if we fail to tend to the "rooms" of our inner lives, we risk becoming empty, quiet, and devoid of meaning. This shoot was a poignant reminder of that drift. But it also proved a greater truth: life can always return, even to the darkest, most forgotten corners.

No matter your story or your circumstances, regardless of what the world says or thinks of you, you alone hold the key to the quality of your life. Do not wait for permission. Do not waste the time you have. Create something beautiful.

You are loved. You are valued. You are needed. Always remember this.

John 1:5 says “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

I took this photograph inside the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum in Weston, West Virginia. A place that once held deep personal struggles, heavy silence, and pain. Yet, even in the cracks of a heavy hallway, the cross remains.

To me, this is the heartbeat of the Easter story. Our faith isn’t just for the bright, polished spaces of the world. It’s most powerful in the ruins. Easter reminds us that no matter how desolate the environment or how heavy the history, our Father in Heaven brings promise of renewal.

As a Christian, I am moved by the reminder that Christ didn’t just conquer death; He entered into our deepest brokenness to ensure we never have to walk through it alone. May we find hope in the cracks and peace in the quiet on this Resurrection Sunday.

Arched Solitude:

Golden Hour has made its way to the Madison Seminary. The golden hues create a warm, almost ethereal glow that lights this old room up, and the feeling of serenity and calm in this moment, in a building that has seen its fair share of hardships, was quite beautiful.

I had the opportunity to visit the Indiana State Sanatorium in Rockville last Sunday.

The Sanatorium is currently undergoing a massive restoration by its current owners, who purchased the property in late 2020. The site, which was originally the state-run Tuberculosis hospital, operated from 1911-1968, and was converted into the Lee Alan Bryant Healthcare Center in 1976, a privately operated nursing and psychiatric facility, and operated as such until its closure in 2011.

This photograph was taken inside Adams Hall, a five story dormitory building constructed by the state of Indiana, circa 1953 to house sanatorium staff. This building was converted into the psychiatric ward during the Lee Alan Bryant era.
