I think we as photographers and even our clients sometimes forget something really important:

Photography is still art.

We talk so much about ā€œstyle.ā€ Light and airy, dark and moody, true to color, cinematicā€¦the list goes on and on. But the reality is, while the way we edit may lean one direction or another, the light affects the final image just as much, if not more.

How we see the light, how we take it in, how we adjust to itā€¦all of that changes what the image becomes.

Iā€™d consider my own work fairly true to color, but the longer Iā€™m in this industry, the more I realize sometimes the image tells you what it wants to be.

Itā€™s okay to have a direction with your work. We all do. But donā€™t be afraid to let that sun really shine. Let those shadows get a little moodier than you normally would. Let the moment dictate the image instead of trying to force every image into the exact same box.

Itā€™s art.

Have fun with it.

Iā€™ll never force you to leave your reception for portraits, but if the sky starts showing off, Iā€™m absolutely going to come find you.

Give me 10ā€“15 minutes around sunset and we can create some of the most romantic, dramatic photos from your entire day. Itā€™s also one of the few chances youā€™ll get to step away from everyone, slow down for a second, and just be together.

So no, you donā€™t need sunset photosā€¦

but Iā€™m also not saying you wonā€™t regret skipping them. šŸ˜‰

Growing a tiny human is such a short season, and maternity photos are one of the best ways to remember it. My biggest piece of advice? Donā€™t wait to book! I recommend reserving your session during your second trimester so we can photograph you between 28ā€“34 weeks, when your bump is beautifully round and youā€™re typically still feeling your best.
