It may be summer, but the landscape in Auburn's Western States Trail are still green as ever. The river seen from this vantage point creates a great place to cool down on a hot day.

I really enjoyed the way the light hit the water in this photo, especially contrasted with the moody dark rocks. There is a great overlook above the stream at Hidden Falls that gives you some interesting views of the canyon.

The Pipevine Swallowtail Caterpillar, making it's way up a stem from the forest floor.

The Caterpillar has bright orange spots on its body, which it uses as a natural defense to ward off predators. Interestingly, the Caterpillar feeds off Pipevine plants and stores toxins from the plant in its body, acting as another layer of defense.

This will allow the Caterpillar to eventually transform into a beautiful Pipevine Swallowtail butterfly, which is recognized by it's blue wings, often with orange and white dots.
