The Harlequin duck (Histrionicus histrionicus) is a small, strikingly patterned sea duck known for its love of turbulent waters, inhabiting fast-moving mountain streams in summer and rocky coastlines in winter. Males are boldly colored with slate blue, white, and reddish-brown markings, while females are drab brown with white facial spots, resembling the patchwork costumes of Italian harlequin clowns, which inspired their name. They are diving ducks that feed on aquatic invertebrates and are adapted to cold, rough environments, often found near pounding surf and whitewater.

Caught this Dusky Grouse putting on a show on a mountain peak in Yellowstone National Park. That deep, rhythmic drumming sound is his way of telling every lady grouse in Wyoming that he’s the ultimate catch.
