Hopefully start a bike ride tomorrow morning from the centre of Winnipeg, following the Red River south into America, then continue to follow the rivers south for 3 months (the Red, the Souix, Missouri and Mississippi) with a drinks break in Kentucky all being well. The full distance from here to New Orleans is about 4000km, but we will see.
The aim of this is to connect the ride I did in 2008 (Seattle coast to New York coast) at Fargo, North Dakota, with Clarkesdale in Mississippi, which was a stop on my ride across the south in 2010.
Big thanks to Fan and Sarah at the Bike Dump in Winnipeg, who put together a bike for me in advance. Bike Dump is a community venture in Winnipeg, run by volunteers, doing great things; I am endetted.
The bike was a real bargain price, then pannier bag and tools from the 'thrift shops', tent and sleeping bag were Walmart, and everything together was still under $200.
I packed my granddad's repair kit, which probably has bits for shodding cart horses in it.
Thanks to Nick Bain for the Leeds shirt, seems the only sensible shirt to wear, and in Leeds 'Tubthumping' style, "if I get knocked down, I get up again" ...unless it was a truck.
If things don't workout on the bike, I will follow the same route somehow, as it is part of the USA that I haven't seen on the 17 years of traveling and living here (Omaha, Kanasa, St Louis..)
'No pain no gain', and 'the only failure is not trying', should make it a worthwhile venture, whatever happens. Cheers, Phil.
