Well yes, I do think Pearl is cute and I love her very much. But I also donāt believe dogs like Pearl should exist. Both things can be true at once.
Pearl is a victim. A victim of human greed, neglect, and cruelty. Her bone structure is not āimpressiveā or ācoolā ā itās a consequence. A reminder of what happens when humans prioritize appearance over wellbeing.
She came into the shelter terrified, sick, covered in wounds, and severely underweight. Since then, she has made incredible progress in foster care. But dogs like Pearl donāt just magically ābounce backā from the lives they were forced to survive.
And I think situations like Pearlās deserve nuance. Her reactions to the world around her are trauma responses. Survival skills. Not character flaws.

I donāt look at Pearl as āhigh maintenanceā or āspecial needs.ā I see a dog who just needs someone willing to understand her, meet her where sheās at, and recognize the incredibly special dog so many of us already see.
Pearl deserved better long before we met her. But she is here now. And she deserves the chance to be loved the way every dog should have been from the beginning.
