The Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus) is a large owl known for its ear tufts and distinctive hoot. These birds eat a variety of prey, including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and insects. Spotting them in the wild is tough due to their excellent camouflage and nocturnal habits. Cheers!

I made another trip out to Yolo Bypass last week (this time with the kiddo) and had a chance to photograph this little Black Phoebe. It was a beautiful sunny day, and there were several of these birds in the area, but only one was consistently close enough to the observation deck we were on to photograph. This was my first time really observing this species, and I was taken by the charming way he would return to the same spots over and over as he made his rounds looking for the next little morsel to snack on. Fascinating!

Took my mum on an impromptu jaunt over to Yolo Bypass and had a few wonderful moments with this little Black-Crowned Night Heron during its lunch break. I love photographing wading birds, especially herons and egrets. It's like watching a master spear fisherman patiently waiting for the most opportune moment, and then... GOTCHA!!!
