I’m working through the process of planning the final exterior shoot for the new Tani Cantil-Sakauye Courthouse. This phase is always an opportunity to educate clients on what makes for exceptional photography — and it all begins with light. Given the building’s north orientation, June is the ideal month to schedule the shoot for optimal conditions. I also love pushing the creative envelope to deliver something that truly stands out and gives the client imagery that goes beyond the expected. One technique I plan to incorporate is long exposures of around eight minutes, which transform clouds into sweeping design elements and bring a sense of drama and movement to the glazing. As summer progresses, clouds become increasingly rare — so when they do appear, it’s a matter of dropping everything and being in the right place at the right moment.

Great light is everything, and for me, that almost always means arriving before sunrise. The early morning hours offer something rare — a stillness before the city stirs, before traffic fills the streets — and it’s the time I find most rewarding for architectural work. Most shoots at this hour run without a hitch, but this one required some post-production problem-solving. Unmovable cars in the parking lot and poorly patched asphalt both had to be seamlessly removed and corrected in Photoshop.

Holy Rosary Church, Woodland, CA.

This was completed under a tight deadline before the exterior lighting could be fully fine-tuned. Although it is a great shot, please refer to the final version once the exterior lighting has been properly adjusted. With those refinements, the lighting should look far more natural and polished — this is simply one of those situations where my hands were tied.
