365 days ago, I was in NYC, on the way to Siberia. Two of my closest friends and I had scored a huge job with the top car manufacturer company in the world, shooting cars for them on a frozen lake. While we were waiting to leave NYC and fly to Moscow, the former president goes on TV and says that he was blocking international travel. I had gotten the week off work so I could get this job done, so were offered the opportunity to stay in NY for some days, but we all decided to take the first flight back home. I needed to see my kids and let them know that it was gonna be ok.
On the flight back I began creating my google classroom and trying to figure out how to teach if we were going to be told to stay home. I signed up for Zoom, I did a ton of online class research. I was trying to come back prepared.
When my kids saw me in my class that Friday, they ran to me and gave me the biggest group hug, I had only been gone one day! I tried to teach as much as possible, but they kept wanting to know about the future, and what would happen to the school. I promised them we were going to be ok, and that I would see them on Mondayā¦. later that afternoon we got an email from our district stating that we would not be going to school for at least the next two weeks⦠and we have yet to go back till this dayā¦.
It has easily been the toughest, most heart-breaking year teaching of my life, and that is saying a lot. However I am SO proud of that class, they really did not miss a beat and finished 4th grade so strong, I made sure to let them know proud I am of them, and how successful I know theyāre going to be in 5th Grade.
Today, things are looking a little better, in a couple of weeks I will be getting my vaccine and our district is looking at opening up in about 4 weeks. School wonāt be the same right away, it will definitely be weird with the restrictions we have, but I know that we are adaptable and we will be able to overcome this. Most importantly, I know that the kids wonāt be playing Fortnite while Iām trying to teach math š. Brighter days ahead!
Thanks for attending my TedTalk
