I am going through my boxes and boxes of old negs. I've got stuff dating back to high school. I will begin the long process of scanning some of the negs over the next few months (with help from Gary Kazanjian). It will be interesting to see the growth from my early days struggling with exposure and film processing in to what I hope is a better but still growing body of work.
I'm gonna post a few tonight, including the picture that launched my career. My first week at my first internship at the Gilroy Dispatch I was totally overwhelmed by 7-10 assignments a day and wasn't feeling like I had control of my pictures. On Saturday one of my 6 assignments was a parade in Morgan City, Ca. Parades are difficult to shoot and I was struggling to find enough pictures to fill a photo page. I saw this rag tag band coming my way and noticed that everyone in the group was wearing a different outfit and they were playing different songs. Then the leader of the group, a large, barefoot, bearded guy wearing a diaper and playing a wooden flute began to march toward and then across a pile of recently deposited pile of horse crap. In bare feet. I went into auto mode and made three quick frames of the bizarre band.
This was before digital cameras so I had no idea if I had gotten the picture or if it was a good as I hoped. I had 5 other assignments to attend to before I could get back to the office and develop the film and make prints.
I was happy to find the picture on my film but I wasn't sure my editors were going to be as receptive. Small town papers tend to be conservative to appease their readers. I printed the picture and showed it to my editor, who laughed and then told me he would run it 4 columns on a picture page.
The picture won several awards and got the attention of several bigger newspapers. It was the one picture that people always commented on in my student portfolio and helped me get work at larger papers. My favorite comment on the picture came from a friend who said it reminded him of a Fellini film.
