🔋 LITHIUM-ION BATTERY SAFETY

How quickly can a lithium-ion battery fire develop? Very quickly.

Lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices we use every day—phones, laptops, power tools, e-bikes, e-scooters, and electric vehicles. They store a large amount of energy in a small space.

When a battery is damaged, defective, overheated, or improperly charged, it can enter thermal runaway—a self-heating chain reaction that can produce extreme heat, flammable gases, fire, and sometimes explosions.

⚠️ CHARGE SAFELY
▪️ Never charge e-bikes or e-scooters while sleeping or leave them charging unattended overnight.
▪️ Where appropriate and following manufacturer instructions, charge and store batteries in a safe location away from combustible materials.
▪️ Use certified/listed batteries, devices, and compatible chargers from reputable manufacturers.
▪️ Keep e-bikes, e-scooters, and batteries away from exits and escape routes.
▪️ Stop using a battery if it swells, overheats, leaks, smells unusual, changes shape, or makes unusual noises.

🔥 Thermal runaway can escalate rapidly. Know the warning signs and get away from a battery that is smoking, popping, or burning.

Small battery. Big energy. Use it safely.

It is with deepest regret and great sorrow the Addison Volunteer Fire Department announces the passing of 10-year member and current Second Assistant Chief, Phillip Stearns at the age of 49. He joined the department in 2016 and was elected as Captain in 2019. After 3 years as captain he was elected as Second Assistant Chief in 2022.
He also served as a member of the Vergennes Fire Department for 15 years starting as a cadet in 1993.

Phil was a dedicated member of the department, responding to almost every call we had. For the last several years he has had the most training hours in the department. He took pride in the department and was always willing to take on anything that was asked of him.
Phil’s dedication to make the department stronger was unmatched. His openness and willingness to teach others made him the person new members knew they could go to with any questions.

Chief Stearns will be greatly missed by the fire service and the community he served. The void he leaves will be impossible to fill.

Information on Funeral arrangements will be shared at a later date.
