Light doesn’t create emotion… shadows do.

These two portraits were created using the same principles I recently had the privilege of sharing with the Lakewood Ranch Digital Photography Club during my presentation, “The Art of Subtractive Lighting: Creating Depth, Drama, and Mood in Portraiture.”

Instead of filling every shadow with light, I carefully shaped the light to reveal only what I wanted the viewer to see. The result is depth, movement, and visual storytelling that elevates a portrait beyond a simple photograph.

Working with the incredibly talented ballerina Kalia in my St. Augustine studio, my goal was to create a portrait that felt both powerful and elegant. Using light, shadow, and flowing fabric, I wanted to capture not just a pose, but the emotion and artistry behind every movement.
