Cloudy conditions can present photo opportunities. Although blue skies and puffy clouds can be nice, the clouds make "street photography" easier. And the white background present opportunities to do fun things with color.

As Minnesota's amateur baseball season winds down with the state tournament, I'm sharing some favorite photos from the 30 fields I visited in 2026.

Among those photos are ones I took in and around dugouts.

I don't take dugout access for granted. I appreciate the teams' willingness to let me photograph there, because I realize it can be a sacred space and I'm somewhat in the way.

For some games at some fields, I'm in the dugouts only for an inning or so when fences are low and other vantage points are good. Other times, I photograph a lot from the dugouts to avoid pointing my camera through tall chain-link fences. It all depends.

Regardless, the moments I've captured in Minnesota dugouts are some of my favorites from the season. A few players and managers saw me photographing them, even though I try hard to blend in..Occasionally they ask me to take their pictures. But more often than not, they appear not to notice my presence. The candid photos often are the best ones.

Here's a sampling.

As Minnesota's amateur baseball season winds down with the state tournament, I'm sharing some favorite photos from the 30 fields I visited in 2026.

Among those photos are ones depicting grandstands.

Not all the fields have grandstands. Some do great with bleachers, or even just hillsides. This is partly because at some if not many fields, the most sought-after places to watch the game are under shade trees, on picnic blankets, or atop decks where the b**r and conversation flow.

But at the fields with grandstands, some are definitely grand. They include those in Fairfax and Faribault, the first two pictured here.

Atwater (third photo) is building a new grandstand that will include former Metrodome seats. Fast-growing Lakeville and Shakopee (fourth and fifth photos) have large, modern grandstands with press boxes. Upsala and Urbank (photos six and seven) have small grandstands with a rustic feel.

Others pictured here, in order: Watertown, Brooklyn Park, Cologne, Avon, Essig, Waconia, Miesvillle, and Raymond (last two photos).

Well that's a wrap. I visited 30 Minnesota amateur baseball fields this summer, and 69 fields the past three years.

No. 69 was Joe Schleper Baseball Stadium in Shakopee, on Saturday during the Minnesota Baseball Association state tournament.

I stopped by for a few innings for the game between Union Hill and Delano, teams whose fields I've already visited. Then I stayed for a bit after the game as the grounds crew worked to prepare the field for the next game.

I generally photograph game action while visiting the fields. But for this visit, I focused more on the field itself from a fan's perspective because I lacked field access and was on my way to games in Jordan.

Joe Schlepler Baseball Stadium is named after a longtime baesball backer with deep family roots in both Scott and Stearns Counties. The Minnesota Baseball Association's website has an extensive biography, linked in the comments.

The field that carries his name is a snazzy facility that accommodated the sizable crowds well. The grandstand and areas along the baselines and foul lines provided good vantage points for watching the game and conversing a bit too.

The field dates to the 1980s and was named in Schleper's honor after he died in 1998. It's among the amateur fields with Metrodome seats, which in Shakopee replaced ones from Minnesota's first major-league park: Met Stadium. A half-million dollars in renovations took place in 2024. The improvements are impressive and in my humble opinion the money was well-spent.

I enjoyed the crowds ... and will look forward to a day or night when I can get some better action shots. Till then, here are some photos from Saturday's visit to Shakopee.

I'm already looking forward to visiting new-to-me fields next season. I hope to hit 100!

Cologne Hollanders Baseball and Richmond Royals Baseball Team, here are some photos from Saturday's late-start state-tournament game at the Mini-Met. I stayed for about half the game -- till it got too dark for my camera lenses that work best in the daylight. I left the night lenses at home. Whoops.

Anyway ... good luck to Richmond this weekend. Hollanders, I'll see you around next season I'm sure.
