PEACE ON EARTH ☮️
Total serenity was certainly abundant in all my years of helicopter & cat skiing. Powder skiing was the only thing I found that compared to the essence of surfing. This love began in 1974 when I first moved to Mammoth & elevated radically when I became a heli ski guide in 1977. Years later I was fortunate to do a lot of commercial ski photography in Canada, this image from the Cariboos in 1991. These BC ski trips alternated with third world surf trips all through the late 80’s to the early 2000’s.
It was the years of work hard/play hard as I had my galleries to run as well. .
Been scanning a zillion slides & slowly writing my memories of my journey through life... A book will eventually be my end game, even if it is just a massive hardback pictorial with piles of stories just for my son❣️

First golden light.... The reward for starting my day at 5 am, driving, hiking in with great anticipation ... July 2019 in the high country, twas a stellar wildflower year. Elevation at the "Peak" is 12,631 ft.
Some mornings are certainly better than others....

Pure & simple power surfing when boards stayed on the surface of the wave... ahh the good old days...
An epic day in the winter of 1984, the view from the pineapple fields on the cliff above Honolua. The swell tripled in size within a few hours, luckily I snagged a few before that happened😳. I would have been severely under gunned as I was riding a 6’2” Ole Surfboard... thanks Bob✌️

The Reward 🎞.
I was determined to capture this vision back in 2002, the days of medium format cameras & film. I drove seven afternoons in a row from the farthest location on the island to get to this hike. The sunset view every day at about 4000 ft. was obscured by the valley clouds. On the seventh evening of hiking in and out of this location I was just about to my car when I noticed a glimmer of hope for the light. So I ran back out the narrow trail and scrambled to the ledge to get this brief magical light looking down the valley to the ocean below.
Persistence.....✊..
The other aspect of this era of photography was that it had a “purity” to it. You had your one chance to get it all right with your equipment & experience. Your “slide” was the original and the goal was always to present the image to honor it’s honesty.

As much as I love my Nikon D850 & all things digital, I have a whole different appreciation for the trailblazers of film photography. I am reading my old friend Galen Rowell’s book- Mountain Light. He was the personification of someone working for and “earning” his images🙌 ..

Happy Birthday DEBBIE 🎂
75 years young today! Shaking those maracas on the stage at the Golden Bear back in 1977, so blessed to have had the opportunity to photograph her. There are so many incredible photos of this photogenic phenom, especially from Chris Stein. After reading FACE IT for the second time, you really see how hard she worked in Blondie’s formative years. Definitely a lot more than just a “pretty face”! Big Kudos✊🙌
I may have implied I worked for Creem Magazine, which got me backstage before the incredible show & led to some of my favorite images.. thanks Debbie ❤️
