'Black history is not just about the past, it’s about the promise of our future.'
As Black History Month comes to a close, I wanted to do something intentional. Something powerful. Something that plants seeds early.
This year, I chose to showcase a group of our 2/3 year olds from Bartlett Center and I invited them to step into roles society hasn’t always expected us to hold. And boy, did my babies show out 🙌🏾
A female doctor
A male nurse
A female judge
A female police officer
A male business tycoon
And of course, a female presidentđź’•
Each child held books about Black history and Black professionals, because representation matters, and exposure matters even more. The majority of these babies have been at Bartlett Center since they were infants. They are growing up in a place that reminds them daily that they can do and be anything. This session was just a visual affirmation of what we already pour into them.
We actually had to change the session location at the last minute. And honestly? It turned out exactly how it was meant to. Instead of a staged space, you see them in their 'home.' The classrooms and hallways that have helped raise them. The place that nurtures their confidence.
There’s something beautiful about that, because it reminds us that no matter your surroundings, you can be amazingly brilliant, incredibly beautiful, and destined for greatness. You don’t have to wait for perfect conditions to become powerful.
I also included black and white outtakes from the session. Those are some of my favorites. They capture their innocence. Their laughter. Their wiggles. The serious concentration between takes. The joy. The hard work. The magic of being little while dreaming big.
Black history isn’t just something we study in February.
It’s something we build every single day at Bartlett Center, in our community, in our lives.
And these babies?
They are the future we’ve been praying for.
Love on my babies, share their stories because they worked so hard for us! A special thanks to Ms. Angie and Ms. T for chasing, dressing, catching the babies and for helping me bring my dream to life đź’•
